Cryptex Puzzle

Has anyone with a bigger brain worked out the Cryptex puzzle? I've crafted the (locked) Cryptex - but I can't figure out the next steps?

Back to the top of the tower at night; there's an altar like the ones you used to get the Eternal Ember.

Mine isn't giving me the option to use it there
