I don't get it. I beat the tournament as Gustave. It told me it gave me a weapon as a reward. But then I don't have any weapon and when I google it it says I have to beat it with Maelle???

If you beat it with Maelle you get Medalum which is widely considered the best weapon in the game but you can still get it later by beating Golgra with Maelle. I can't remember what weapon you get for winning the tournament with Gustave. Presumably it's something forgettable.

The weapon it gave you likely was one you already have therefore its been upgraded. Maelle gets a specific weapon you can only get from the Tournament or facing Golgra. Golgra.... is not a fight you can easily do the first go around at the village. I didn't beat Golgra until I was Lv58 on Maelle and even that took..... probably 50 some odd tries (not exaggerating) but I am playing on Hard mode.

What it is.
You lose the Tourament then team member 4 will get a Weapon
and the other weapon you would need to beat the chef to get.
Winning the tourament (does not matter who you are) gets you Maelle's weapon.
and you will need to beat the Chef to get team member 4 weapon.
so Win or Lose you still get a Weapon. and the other Weapon you will need to fight the Chef. For.

OP, use an earlier save and do the final fight with Maelle, only needs to be the final fight.

Whoever told you this was very wrong. Winning the tournament with Maelle will get you Medalum. Any other team member will receive an inferior weapon.
