Hard to match this one..
Was difficult to play anything after nier automata for me for example, left me kinda speechless, the experience was pretty strong.
Clair Obscur is good, but not that good, plenty of amazing games out there, but some games leave such a strong impression that like, you need to wean it off to play other things. But it does come back. :P
Or Elden Ring. Which has almost no dialogue, and yet it conveys its message across clearly through atmospheric storytelling.
Heavensward to a lesser degree, and shadowbringers/endwalker are some of the best stories I've ever seen in any video game. ^^
Like strategy games, roguelites, anything not based around their story.
I tried Tainted Grail, a RPG but the story was so badly writen and made no sense it's just impossible to accept it after Clair Obscur.
If you want a game with similar gameplay using turn-based, party combat, with interesting build and party compostion, Darkest Dungeon is IMO one of the best exemples although it doesn't have the active elements of Clair Obscur like parries and dodges.
Persona 5 is fine, but I couldn't help but to start a new game in Clair Obscur. It's just on another level, finished it yesterday, got all of the achievements. And it feels hard to play any other game after that.
I'm now enjoying Metaphor Refantazio, which is different enough that it's not doomed by comparison. It's (so far) a mostly by-the-numbers fantasy adventure story but a pretty well-executed one that I'm enjoying.
There's no risk that I'm going to end up thinking it's a better game the COE33 at the end, but I'm at least no longer constantly thinking "I wish this was COE33," which I think counts as a win.
And gotta be honest, most JRPGs are auto-out because of how exceptionally well done the combat is in E33
Sadly, most of the JRPG gems that were created is not available on Steam or PC.
And they were mostly created pre-PS3 era.
Here's some list of good story focused JRPGs
- Xenogears (PSX)
- Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX, Andriod, IOS)
- Final Fantasy 7 (PSX, Steam, PS4)
- Panzer Dragoon Saga (Sega Saturn)
- Valkyrie Profile (PSX, Andriod)
- Valkyrie Profile 2 (PS2)
- Suikoden 2 (PSX, Steam)
- Suikoden 5 (PS2)
- Shadow Hearts 1 + 2 (PS2, need to play both as they make 1 story)
At least FF7 and Suikoden 2 is available on steam. A tier below, there's Star Ocean 1 and 2 available on steam as well.
Unless it’s a gameplay focused one. Even Resident Evil 4 I play now feels mediocre :(
