Am I meant to grind? I'm level 23-26 fighting Renoir 1st fight and he nukes my characters with spells.
I can parry fine enough, but I miss once and it's over. Then he starts healing and it's not enough damage to destroy the petals.

Am I meant to actually grind (kill mobs, rest, respawn mobs, and so on)?

I wouldn't say grind per se, but you could go exploring other areas. I didn't "grind" until I was level 94 trying to get to 99 for the achievement. I just went around exploring in between traveling to major plot locations.

The difficulty you are on can have a major impact too. Playing on Story you are less likely to get one-shot by a boss, but on Expeditioner it is pretty common, and almost a given on Expert.
reinor in old lumiere, right? try to aim for something around lv 26~30 and weapons at lv 7~10, preferably at 10 for the second perk.

have monoco grab a foot off of a cruler because that's one of the best support skills in the whole game to have for fights like him.

Lune can cleanse with her single target heal if you happen to get afflicted with defenseless, you can also cleanse debuffs like defenseless with the respective buff counterpart (shell in this case)

anyone that can group heal can apply buffs through said healing so long as you have the pictos for it, esp "power on shell" having shell, rush, and power, on said healing buffs can be a tremendous boon, inversely, having someone who can afflict slow or powerless can help as well. rush and slow go hand in hand at making some enemies take longer for their turn to come up and may let some party members take a turn before he does. tint buffing pictos works with healing buffing pictos too, but not the other way around, healing buffs don't trigger tint pictos, etc.

for all things considered, if he's trying to banish someone, do not, let, this, happen, they will be removed from the fight permanently until it's over.

if worse comes to worse, try to kit the whole party expecting to fight him instead of your chosen three at the start

Just posting for anyone finding this thread. Leveled up everyone in the party to 33, 30 and 30 - and it was cake.

Now getting filtered by Renoir Fight 2 lol - I guess I need to level a bit more.
find higher level picto in optional spots. Much nicer stat boost than 3 more stat points. Find new picto for better dmg stuff. Like set up inverted affinity on someone who will do really big numbers and give that person deaths door + SOS powerful.. explore for stronger pictos and weapons.

There is a white nevron blacksmith w high level weapons for the fight. Its to the right of monoco station entrance and that battle field w dualiste, have to swim and find gross tete, an optional boss that you dont need to attack, just walk around it. Or just level the weapon of ur dps.

theres also an overleveled ice place above monoco station. You dont have to attack anything, just run around and collect pictos. Easy power up.

Sounds like you've just been doing the main story, and missing out almost every side area, some of which are full dungeon size. I completed almost every area I had access to before going there and I was level 60-67. Granted, that is with doing the Frozen Heart or whatever which you are definitely not meant to do that early, but other than the bosses it wasn't that bad and gave mountains of xp. Without that area I'd probably be more like 40-50.
The stats from Pictos make the most difference. If you don't have some higher level ones - you might want to track a few down. They make a bigger difference than leveling.
