Why do you lie? A SINGLE Japanese review gave the game 7/10 which was IGN Japan.
And the reviewers complains were that the game is way too hard even on storymode which tells you all you need to know.
Same reviewer also gave Final Fantasy 7 Remake a 10/10 and called it the "perfect JRPG".
FAMITSU gave it a 9/9/9/9 which is higher then the last 2 Final Fantasy games and also higher then all Xenoblade games scored.
The game is also permanently sold out in physical form in Japan and still in the top 5 of both Steam Japan and PSN Japan 3 weeks after launch.
The only other complain i hear from Japanese friends is that they wished the game had a Japanese dub but apart from that they all love it.

People just compare it to JRPG cause it's turn based, and a RPG. But for me it isn't even a JRPG, it's just a good game.
Some people compare it to a soul like cause it has dodge and parry.
You read some people, think it's everyone opinion, get's rilled up against the gaming community and come here saying bs such as "game popularity is not because game good but because..." and i'm like "wtf again ? Why are people so weird...".
My advice ? Play it or don't play it according to how much you like the game and stop worrying about why it's popular if you don't like it, just play something else. You don't have to be like everyone, and everyone just basically don't give a crap about you and don't have to be like you either.
Now you may be frustrated that some games you like don't have the same popularity. Well, you can't do nothing about it, just play them, enjoy it, and replay them until you get another one you like.
I have been playing JRPGs since the 80s, starting out on the NES. I have played all the games you mention (Persona, Xenoblade Chronicles, etc.) and those games existing and being great games do not equate to Expedition 33 being bad.
It sounds like the game is not for you, which I am not saying as a dis or anything, just an observation.

I actually love the parry/dodge system, regardless of the fact it is not "an innovation" (as you put it). I don't think any game without that is stale, as I enjoy many many games that have no such system.
Anyway, it is totally fine if you don't like this game for any reason. To imply that because you don't like it that no one should be liking it as much as they do, however, is kinda narcissistic.
There are people on the internet who loves to spew garbage, and/or they also like to think they're smarter than the average while they're not.

It is definitely top 5 for me.
Xenoblade serie has among the best JRPG evermade, but Xenoblade 2 is probably the worst title, they spent too much time on modeling gigantic boobs and not enough on actually making the game better. First it runs and looks pretty bladly on the Switch, especially compared to Xenoblade 1 & 3. The gacha system should have stayed on mobile trash games, and locking the exploration behind level 5 mining or whatever just remove all the fun for me.

Xenoblade I agree. Persona is too formulaic imo, the calendar system tends to get boring and the devs over-explain every thing like the player is a 9 years-old kid with 5min attention span. Still a great serie, even though I prefer Shin Megami Tensei. Haven't played Metaphor.
While I agree Octopath Traveler has an amazing combat system and gorgeous HD pixels graphics, it was made to cater to SNES era JRPG fans. Trails has its moments but I found the Cold Steel arc really inferior to Crossbell or Sky (haven't played the rest yet).
Pokémon isn't carrying anything. In fact it is probably one the worst JRPG serie to exist today. I still can't comprehend how people still buy this serie, probably they don't know better or are addicted to capturing monsters. The games looks horrendous and runs like ♥♥♥♥ on the console. Gameplay is shallow, there is no combat depth or any difficulty unless you want to play competitive PvP. Story is boring, exploration isn't great either, music is okayish at best. From a JRPG fan point of view, Pokémon games are way out of touch to modern game design/graphics/systems. Legends Arceus at least tried to modernize the formula and the way you catch monsters...
While I can understand, I love it. I love parrying in Dark Souls, I love turn-based combat with real-time systems baked in it (Mario RPGs, Valkyrie Profile, Shadow Hearts, etc.)
Well I'm not sure I follow. Parries, doges and jumps just add to the existing combat system and the customization and depth comes from what pictos you are using, what characters you are playing with and with which weapons. I do agree that one shot builds on turn 1 should never have been a thing. I don't use them and I'd rather not kill the last few superbosses than one-shooting them.
Idk, Persona 5 didn't cater to Western audience at all (quite the contrary I'd say) but still was a major success.
That is probably one of the biggest problem there is, the narrative that the game was made by 33 ex-Ubisoft devs, when it really is 3 Ubisoft devs. Statistically Ubisoft employs a huge amount of People in France, so it's not surprising...
Getting money from national or regional government agencies doesn't rob you of the Indie label, it is in fact quite common and necessary. There a saying that the biggest source of money of Indie games in France is sadly employment benefit. As for the source of money coming from big companies or trust funds, I'm glad this money was used to make this amazing game. Whether the studio remains Indie or not, because they were funded, is irrelevant. What is important is they had a vision for a game, and they could go to the end of their vision without any higher-ups trying to sabotage the project with whatever ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ modern AAA are filled with.
as for your chained echoes gripe, you have to realize that from looks alone it's only going to draw the notice of hardcore fans of these types of games and older gamers who grew up with those kinds of graphics.
Like, I get it, Xenoblade is great, but like I said in your previous thread, I played a vast majority of JRPG's, including some that are jp only, like the very first star ocean. The Xeno titles are also not the "best jrpg's". :P
Clair Obscur is absolutely, 100% one of the best I've played.
You do not know better, in fact, posing like you do is a clear indicator that you don't.
This is your second thread saying "y'all are uncultured, you don't play my games", like, stop rofl, we do play your games, and we do enjoy clair obscur. You don't, it's your problem, I don't know why you're splurging it on steam forums. Are you hoping we're somehow all gonna agree because goddess Katie said this game is bad and we don't play X Y Z video game even if we do ? You're not special because you played xenoblade, in fact, it's probably less underground than 33 lol.
Maybe what you call "culture" isn't culture. I also don't know where you get that idea that everyone who likes Clair Obscur hasn't played Xenoblade or such. I played all the xeno titles. :P
Your thread sounds like "I don't like this game, you like this game, I must explain why you like this game and I don't, but I have no explanation, so I'll just say I don't like it because am more cultured", it's a really childish and petulant mindset. :P
Basically, you're trying to cope as to why you don't like this game, and justify it outside of yourself. Naw man, it's your issue, deal with it. :P
I also don't think I've seen anyone say it's the best JRPG ever, it's not lol. It's also not meant to replace any other jrpg, if anything, it will reawaken western interest in jrpg and lead to us getting more jrpg's. :P
You should celebrate the fact people are still making jrpg's, not dunk on 33 because it's not xenoblade. They are not mutually exclusive. I also don't think any Xenoblade titles matches the emotional impact of 33, they have more gameplay tho. :P
Concerning parries, I was doing that ♥♥♥♥ on mario rpg 30 years ago when I was 9.

I think we found the problem.
It collates all the good things about classic JRPGs (the prologue is semi-deliberately organized like Chrono Trigger's, did you notice?), cherrypicks battle mechanics from across multiple classics (e.g. Megami Tensei's resistance/nullification/absorption element mechanics, Super Mario RPGs timed attacks and counters, Bravely Default's badges (actually Final Fantasy 6's Espers) for equip-to-use-but-you-can-also-learn passives, Final Fantasy's Blue Mage skill-of-your-enemies learning, etc etc), and that extends to world travel (how we go the traditional SNES JRPG route of walking - swimming - flying, using specific takeoff/landing locations, like Seiken Densetsu 3 did it for example), recycling enemies (most monsters Monoco can eat have a non-Chromatic boss version, a Chromatic version and a Big Huge Stonking version like literally any old-style JRPG under the sun) and so on and so forth.
It wasn't MARKETED as a Final Fantasy (or anything else) killer, FWIW. I don't think it's actually directly marketed as a JRPG.
Are people misrepresenting it? Kind of, yes. It's very specifically an alternative TO Final Fantasy and the fact that Squeenix is putting out FF-like-it-was-when-it-was-good games without labeling them Final Fantasy is part of the accusation (e.g. Bravely Default, the actionization of FF7 Remake and FF16, etc).
Most of the games you list as "alternatives" however are mostly... not.
Xenoblade has an offline-MMORPG combat system that I, personally, loathe very much, like you do this one's, making it a distinct case of "maybe you're not the target audience".
Unicorn Overlord is a strategy more than an RPG, and definitely won't scratch the itch many of us have for "I wish there was a Final Fantasy worthy of 5 or 6's legacy but built with modern tech" like 9 was for the PS1 generation.
Fire Emblem is not an RPG, Three Houses is not representative of what the series has always been about (and even Three Houses is NOT AN RPG).
Octopath Traveler (and many other HD-2D games) is very specifically trying to do the exact thing this game is... except deliberately retro.
Metaphor is a great comparison - epic globetrotting adventure based off the ideas of old classics but trying its own new thing, Unfortunately, it's also extremely recent, so it doesn't work as an argument for "lots of alternatives these past years".
Fantasian was hurt severely by being locked away by a subscription on a platform that was not globally available and has only reached a wide audience THIS YEAR. Again, doesn't help with the "lots of alternatives around for years" argument.
The Like a Dragon games JRPG shift has been universally praised... by people that play Like a Dragon. Unfortunately, it remains a niche game, much like... Paper Mario, which I assume you haven't played, because it has a very similar attack/dodge QTE mechanic (as do other Mario-based RPGs, to make them appeal to normal Mario-based game players).
Except Paper Mario doesn't delve into dark subjects, at least not that I've noticed.
Persona 5 (and 3's remake) was an obvious inspiration for this game's interface and combat (and let's face it, you can't do a relationship mechanic in a game these days without drawing a comparison) but Persona 5 was released over a decade ago. It having ports and an enhanced edition doesn't make it count any more than Persona 3 Reload whcih mainly leaves the core of the game untouched. For people that have already played it back on the PS2/PSP that's well-trod ground, not new hotness.
You've omitted Shin Megami Tensei V from your list, which (especially with Vengeance) could qualify for comparison given E33's borrowing of its combat ideas, and it would be a great example of "no, the genre isn't as empty as you say", but the pared-down list of actually comparable games gives one enough time to have completed it after either of its versions released to find thirsty for more turn-based JRPGs by the time E33 finally happened.
I'd also add South Park the Stick of Truth and its sequel to the list which NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE PLAYED due to the license it's attached to despite being a sprawling engaging mechanically-complex JRPG (also with QTE-like combat prompts to enhance or reduce damage) with unique combat mechanics for every party member, but both of these are also not recent at all.
Pokemon... hasn't tread new ground in ages, narratively or mechanically, and being a children's version of Shin Megami Tensei limits the kind of narrative it can play around with.
A final suggestion could be Sea of Stars, which checks a lot of similar boxes due to being a deliberate homage to Squeenix 16-bit RPGs (hyperfocused on Chrono Trigger, again), but its retro styling and GUESS WHAT, QTE-BASED PARRY SYSTEM has limited its appeal. That said, it definitely fits the same mold, in fact, E33 made me pick it back up on the Switch because this game's parries made me get better at THAT game's parries. Fancy that.
E33, however many people made it, manages to somehow combine multiple checkboxes of success across the board, of which the only universal stumbling block is the parry mechanic.
- Well written characters with complex backstories but straightforward down-to-earth problems, making them relatable
- Amazing 9 hour long soundtrack where almost every track is a memeable banger
- Non-worn-out setting
- Adult themes that, I believe, at best only Persona 3 and Terranigma touched in any extended amount of effort
- It's cosmic horror with a twist that makes it both more scary and more comprehensible
- Buildable-and-rebuildable character equipment mechanics that let you tailor playstyles how you see fit to a souls-like extent extremely uncommon for JRPGs
- Doesn't have an $80 price tag
- Literally no plot holes
- Everybody loves to see a major landmark disfigured and finally it isn't the Tokyo Tower or the Statue of Liberty
You could sit all day pointing out things E33 borrows from classic JRPGs (Gestrals are Mannikins from SMT3! The final antagonist actually makes a bit of sense like in Persona 5 Royal! You'd be hard-pressed to point out an actual BIG BAD until the extreme end like in Chrono Trigger! People are actually copies of people like in Final Fantasy 8 or Digital Devil Saga!) but the end result doesn't change significantly: it has more things to like about it than things to hate and it REALLY has been a while since we got a JRPG with so little caveats about it that wasn't a remake (especially with how often the caveats included "the remake kills a feature of the original people liked").
