The answer to this is a mild spoiler but there is an answer to it.
One expedition did make it back, a long time ago...
Also, it's possible or even likely that there was some basic non-Expedition level exploration done that would have very quickly made clear the existence of Nevrons.
The dome, the shield of Lumiere protects it from the Nevrons, but it does not protect them on the sea and islands around them. So plenty of them died to Nevrons even outside of the expeditions.
And yes, color is life in this world.
