Otherwise, they just go with completely different characters.
And the reason why Clea would enter a writing is to affect the health of the writers IRL, it could seriously hurt them, or put them into a non ending world of nightmares which they can't escape. I dunno throwing ideas at the wall.
I think Verso's ending IS canon.
Maybe it's just me, but i think that they really insist on pushing the fact that Maelle IS NOT the main character.
Chapter 1 is Gustave, Chapter 2 is Verso, and everything turn pretty much around them, Chap 1 is the story of Gustave, you get many things with him only
Chap 2 is the evolution of Verso as a character in the Expedition 33.
Maelle is a relationship, just as Sciel, Monoco, Esquie and Lune.
Also the only choice you can do in the game, change something only if you chose Verso.
Game universe is pretty much Renoir Vs Aline,
Renoir created Expedition to stop Aline, which they can't do
because Aline created Renoir/Verso/Alicia, to protect the manor, which is the only way to get her.
It's only because Alicia was egoistic that the end of the paintress was possible, but what made it happen is 100% Verso.
Everyone else in the game is just following the cycle they were created for.
Lumiere's people keep repeating the cycle of going and dying, because they're not powerful enough.
And if they succeed, just like Expedition 0, then they would turn against their old fellow, because if not, it would mean killing everyone.
Even Maelle is like this.
Verso is the main character, and Renoir (the true one) is an absolute chad.
