Is story good all the way till end?
I read few comments how game becomes tiresome in last act or so (act 3) and how characters don’t matter anymore. What are your opinions about this?

There's a sharp plot twist at the end of Act II and throughout Act III which annoys quite a few people because it comes really out of the blue with very little warning. Of course, playing the game a second time you see all the small hints and totally clear signs, but it does throw some people off. The core of the story is something few find comfortable - grief and loss - and there are people who have a hard time accepting that there is no miracle solution.

Ah cool, that is nice summary.

Act 3 is basically 3 hours of story gameplay or you can take on the challenge and kill difficult bosses (2-3 of them will bring a bit of story and lore) in open world. But as far as I understand, the main complaint of those who didn't like Act 3 is that the game doesn't follow the usual JRPG plot canons.

The twist near the end is very divisive; there's a lot of people who think it's brilliant too. Personally I liked the idea of it, the execution was lacking in a few ways, but nowhere near bad enough to keep me from recommending the game wholeheartedly.

Let me put it to you like this, comparatively against some of the "major releases" that were "praised for their story" such as Veilguard and Avowed... Those legitimately rate at like a 2/10. Maybe a 3/10 if you're generous. Expedition 33 rates, in my opinion, on story alone, a solid 8.5-9. Could it have been delivered a little better between the end of act 2 and end of act 3, yes. Did it suffer a pacing problem towards the end, yes. However, it was the first game in many, many years that actually kept me invested in the story to the very end, and holds up equally to every other part of the game.

Some people didn't like it, I haven't seen an objectively correct reason as to why they are complaining about it other than what I believe to be the tone shift that occurs and how it is delivered, but I still don't think that is enough to detract from me recommending this game and crowing it my GOTY.

Well seems like most replies here agree with what you wrote. Thanks

The ending is controversial. Some people hated the end of act1, others hated end of act2, some hated the ending.
But a huge number of people really liked the whole story.
I don’t think it’s possible to tell if you will like it or not.
I personally loved it to a point it’s difficult to enjoy other story driven games now. The bar was set so high.

Ah damn, that is high praise.

It's a masterpiece of a story. It's only divisive because there are a lot of people who aren't capable of absorbing details unless it's an AI voice giving them a plot summary.

The main difference is acting.
It’s so exceptionally good other games feel so generic, fake, childish.

Same goes for the OST.
