You can't blame Maelle for her choice, but you can also understand Verso's dilemma.
People argue about the Canvas being "real", but that's a spiritual question for each individual in which you can't really force an answer onto people.
The wisest thing the people at Sandfall can do is tell a Meta story through the Arts (Paint, Ink and Music) like they did in Expedition 33 through the painters.
But so would choosing the "right" right ending which is so divisive, it's better to let players argue over such things by themselves instead of choosing for them like many other studios do.
Honestly, expanding on this newly established franchise is the best course, imo. Expand the outside world and set yourself up for more creative freedom or don't and focus on the Painters.
I'm just a random dude, so my opinion is obsolete to them anyway, lol.
