For beating the normal game and story you dont need it at all.
Its really only for the optional Act 3 content. And even that you can do without it, it just makes it a LOT easier.
Medalum is great for one reason, it starts Maelle in the "Virtuoso" stance that gives 200% bonus damage. Combined with all the solo pictos skills and damage increases for first hit and such you can hit for lilke 30-40mil HP on your first attack easily without much effort.
If you refine it even more it can go over a billion.
The strongest boss in the game on a first playthrough on Expert has 45mil HP so you see why that build is popular.
So the next best thing is to use a weapon that does something else really well, and you can still go Virtuose turn 2.
But she is still the best without it. Just need an extra round to get OP without Medalum. But that extra round can make farming much slower.
By the point you are able to get it, you don't even need it anymore...
Medalum is good up until the end, no contest, one of Maelle's best weapons.
There's clearly some things you don't understand about the game. :P
I still use Medalum at lvl ~85
EDIT: alright who necrod this thread
