Story and writing style
Without any spoilers, could someone tell me if the story, setting and writing in this game are all surrealistic French nonsense where you never really know what's real or not and literally anything could happen at any moment because it's all like a dream or something?

Or is it more of a grounded world that follows a certain logic and tries to remain consistent with its rules.

Also, is the dialogue full of pretentious vague philosophical concepts or do they talk like relatively normal people.

I don't mind fantasy but I just want to be able to understand what's going on.

Yes. To all.

Vague, artistic, odd. You don't know if it's real. You nailed it actually.

hard to not spoil anything at all, but essentially no, you wont know exactly whats going on until pretty much the very end, but thats the point. it was intentionally done that way. story-wise, it starts off veeeeeery strong, and kinda falls off from act 2 onward.
the logic is consistent (within the context of the game, once you understand the full story).
the dialogue is good, imo. the characters are pretty relatable and acted well. no game has got me as emotionally attached to a certain character as this game has.

ultimately, since it seems like you're asking this to decide if you should buy it, you should. the story isnt everyone's cup of tea, and some of the mechanics are tricky for people that just make them rage all over the forums, but its a good game. and realistically, its a AAA quality game for like 60% of the price of a standard AAA box of cash grab garbage, so even it you dont LOVE the game, the price tag makes it very worth it.

The game is always intentionally vague on how a lot of things work; it never gets too nerdy with its magic systems or terminology. But the story is given a logical explanation...eventually. And the characters do speak normally.

Yes, the game twists and turns but it is all for a good reason, the story is great and even if you have some questions at the end of the main quests, it is not something that is egregious or detracts from overall enjoyment.

No this isn't Being and Nothingness: A Phenomenological Essay on Ontology by Jean-Paul Sartre.

that's because he knows the story and is baiting. That's why he calls it nonsense in the first sentence and goes on to bash the writing style later in his post. Baiting responses
So, a bit vague and twisty but not hardcore Sartre, got it, lol :)
Ok, I'll probably wishlist and wait for a sale on this one as I do like turned based combat.
Thanks for the responses

The world follows rules, but you won't know what they are for some time. The game leaves open a lot of questions early on, but also wraps them all up as it goes on.

It somehow ends up both convoluted and yet extremely easy to follow. In the end, the overall theme is fairly simple, and relatable.

The game very much jean-paul sartre, albert camus. The plot very vague but as the game goes i think is fairly easy to understand, i actually like how easy to understand the story without being too complicated.
