Simon isn't designed well
By the time I got to him I was already in burnout territory having done everything else up to that point, way too much optional content that was largely seal clubbing with a few interesting bits inbetween. And what do I get for the ultimate fight? A fight that throws out all the interesting possibilities that the combat system and mechanics allow, nothing neat with elements, heal checks, usage of break, free shot mechanics, adds, none of that. Just boiled down to "♥♥♥♥ you, heres your 1 hp, perfect dodge or enjoy your loading screen.

And lets be real here, nobody is engaging with the fight fully. You just roll the dice on your attempts until you can get a nuke setup and oneshot him for the last 60+%. Worse yet, I had to rip up all my pictos setup to get rid of shields and try with more damage related setups and with no gear presets I need to fix all that again to continue playing how I normally would.

I bailed on it and just watched the journal entry on youtube which is what I was mainly interested in, collecting the story bits. I value my time too much to go for the clear and like I said, 100 hours in already I'm pretty ready to move on to another game at this point. Still got Lumiere to do and the final story boss there.

It feels like they took all the worst elements of elden ring as influence. "how can we make Malenia even more cancer?"

Im all for a challenge, but this is just difficult for difficult sake, and annoyingly feast or famine.

And its just sad there was ultimately very little in the game that required cool builds or strategy, or interesting mechanics. Much of it was too easy, or one of these gimmick fights that strip away all of that.

It's insane to me that people can spend 100 hours on their first playthrough. No wonder, you are burnt out.

I mean, I was just doing everything available, I have no way of knowing whats meaningful or not for either story or gear.

I certainly didnt want to spend this long. Or rather, I wish the game wasnt so bloated to even have that as an option. 60-80 for full completion is the sweet spot IMO for an rpg

I also did everything available and backtracked a lot when I unlocked swimming. You would have had to do a lot more running and swimming around than I did.

 im playing on expert so that pads things out a bit, and I spent longer than I should have beating my head against some high level areas early.

That might be it.

I also played on Expert and 100%ed the game around the 60 hour mark.

I see other people doing similar I really dont know how I ate up so much time. Maybe I should play a little more fast and loose. Rise of Ronin is another huge time sink that I was needing to get back to and finish after this. Its all got me craving the 8 hour corridor games of a couple decades ago

Not to argue if Simon is well or badly designed as I’ve one shotted him.

But people do fight him normally like in old FF games. Few people on the planet can parry him but anybody can use reviving potions.

If he wouldn't take away your shields - he'd be fine. I really liked that for the most part of the game I had at least 4 hits (with in medias res) that I could take while learning the fight. He's phase 1 is so pathethic that it can't live past single attack and his phase 2 is too tanky in comparison, plus you need to skip cutscenes every single time. Maybe with proper "tanky" builds you can go in and learn it in more relaxing way but I just didn't have it in me to bother with it.

He has some cool things like gommaging your party at certain point but I dunno. It's too tempting to just overpower him and be done with it

It’s so strange to me that people will say stuff like “it’s so weird to me people spent 100 hours on first playthrough.”

I’m in your team man. Bro I was just playing the game and doing all the side dungeons? Like what are you talking about? LOL

Fights in expert mode can take quite a bit especially if you're not using a broken build.
I'm taking like 10-15 minutes on those giant tall monster that swallow your members.

it's insane to me that people can beat modern RPGs in under 100 hours. . .
100 hours seems short to me.
