COE33 creates a new genre. Prove me wrong.
I am a seasoned soul game lover and player - NG+3 on sekiro, NG+5 blood borne, NG+3 demons soul, NG+2 Elden ring (just way too long), NG+8 wukong (I know some say it's not a soul game I don't care I love it).

And COE33 being a turn based JRPG I was super sceptical after the first trailer, but now 30 hours + in, I'm LOVING IT.

I think it just started a new genre - turn based souls like.

I beat the stupid serpent last night at a low level (65) after a long ass exhausting but exhilarating flight (1.5 hours), and I think this is the best RPG combat design period.

You might also call it a music game with scare factor.

first of all this game is not a jrpg. it is a turn based rpg. this game was not made in japan.
second of all, no this game has not done ANYTHING unique or new that hasnt been done before in other turn based rpgs. paper mario, mario rpg, persona, final fantasy. EVERYTHING in this game can be attributed to those games.
does this game take different ideas and mechanics and blend them together well? yes. is it "creating a new genre" absolutely not. not even remotely.

There is nothing soulslike about this game, whatsoever. Unfathomable you could play so many of them and make such a mistake.
It's RPG systems that have been done before, but revised a bit for the current gen's tastes. It's why it "Clicks." with a fair amount of people. Best ever? Not even close, but a good game none the less.
"JRPG" why? It was made in Montreal, I think. Expedition 33 didn't really innovate on any new mechanics that other turn-based RPGs haven't done before; perhaps the jump dodges and team parries are new? That said, it's an incredible AAA-defying game deserving at the very least a mention for game of the year.

If you like this sort of game, then you're simply into the turn-based RPGs that involve QTEs and a block/parry system. Off the top of my head, I'm sure you'll enjoy Lost Odyssey, Paper Mario (try Thousand Year Door first) and Sea of Stars.

There's more to gaming than just soulslikes - and that's coming from a guy who's got over 3000 hours combined in soulslikes.

Yes, this is exactly how the developers describe their game. Heavy FromSoftware influence in various systems, explicitly using the Sekiro parry mechanics.

I wouldn't say it's a new genre unless other games start making similar games. At that point, "turn-based Souls-like" might be carved out as a sub-genre.

As is, COE33 is in the Souls-like genre, as the developers intended.

Of course it's an RPG at the core, but more FromSoftware inspiration for stuff like the defense system or even stats system or the battle design.

I wanted to do a turn-based game, but I was also kind of burnt out by turn-based games, so I wanted to make something that felt fresh. I was playing Sekiro on the side, and I was like, "I love parrying. Why can't I parry in my game?"

i tend to agree. i mean other games have done similar things but in the 30+ years i've been gaming this game does it in a way that's compelling enough to say it's genre defying.
Calm down, this is just Lost Odyssey 2. Nothing new here, it is well done, but nothing new.
The combat is paper mario except supremely well executed. Glad you're having fun though OP

I think it's important to note that Expedition mode is for people who want Clair to mostly play as a turn base game like that's literally the description of said mode. While Expert mode is your typical from game.

The way weapons are upgraded and have certain stat affinities is pretty much ripped straight from Dark Souls. And then the flags with the refilling resources and respawning enemies clearly takes inspiration from soulslikes, as well.
...play sea of stars. This game isnt the only turn by turn w a timing input press whatever mechanic for protection and attacking.
Typical obnoxious souls fan.

Except there's no punishment for losing boss fight. No xp/money drop no risk x reward even consumable are practically unlimited.
So no, its clearly unqualified to be soulslike.

I'm not saying it's a soulslike, just that it clearly takes heavy inspiration from soulslikes.
Tell me you haven't played a turn based rpg or jrpg before w/o saying it.
