How do I get enemies like Mimes to "break" more quickly?
Mimes, for example, put up a tough wall that makes it very hard to get their break meters full. I have been slamming them with damage and it seems to take forever.

Am I missing something? Mimes are the main focus here: we took about 15 minutes just to get one of them to breaking point(yellow meter full).

I am about level 30-33 and mid Act2(uh, I think). We just got the option to go fight "big bosses" that will bring the barrier down.

Esquie just got the ability to break through red/purle coral.

There is skills and pictos that add more break might have to look over what you have available. Also pay attention to skills that say "can break".

Not 100% sure, but break damage seems to be based on the amount of damage you deal. So it's like a second health bar. And certain pictos and skills will deal greater break damage.

I just learned that this is NOT The case. Apparently "can break" does nothing until the break meter is full.

I have been keeping break-capable characters with me.

The fight I juts did was two Mimes on some random island. We did it....but it felt like 20 minutes and I had to use my backup crew to finish.

Monoco has nice Break skills, and paired with the break damage pictos, Mimes become a cakewalk.
In any case, they have only a couple of combos, so it's not too difficult to learn to evade them
EDIT: Also there's really good break skill for Maelle. I use them both to deal with mimes

That's what I was getting at though? I keep Monoco with me with skills that "can break". But it tends to be that at least with skills that say "can break" they add to the bar faster in the examples I have seen.

Yes, "Can Break" with the break icon only means they can trigger the stun when the meter is full. It doesn't effect the rate it fills it.

There are some skills that have higher break damage, but I don't recall them off the top of my head. Monoco's Stalact is the only one I can think of, and his Bonk skill has a fixed 20% bonus if empowered. Counterattacks are also extremely powerful both for damage and break damage, and you can get plenty of pictos that boost break damage.
Sniper is quite a handy picto too. Boosts the damage of the first free aim shot and allows to break. Means you aren't restricted to certain skills.

multi hit skills, like thunder magic, seem pretty good. also sklls that do high damage, like it says "medium physical dmg, instead of low. Stacking burn doesnt seem to do a lot tho, maybe the move;s impact damage is different. But each burn chips. the overcharge of gus or the consume 4 stains nuke of lune seem to chunk a lot more bar than other attacks,

The fastest way is auto-death and breaking death.
This will kill one of your party members at the beginning of every fight but also fill the break gauge of all enemies.
Once you get the second chance pictos, that character even gets instantly revived.

Portier crash is another one. I have in one hit filled the bar and broken many enemies and mimes with Monoco using this skill in Almighty.

The tutorial says the opposite, but I think it means that more damage per hit = more break damage, but I'm not sure.

For some reason I feel that marked Percee adds an insane amount of break

When a skills says "increased break damage", does it mean:

1. It fills the break meter faster.

or

2. It does extra damage WHILE the enemy is broken

???

break bar at 0%, 0% break damage received

Break damage means the amount of damage you do to the actual bar below it. There's quite a few counter picto's that allow you to increase break damage, plus 1 for normal attacks and free shots.

Verso also has a 5 hit combo that, at S rank, does quite a bit of break damage. Been able to insta-break mobs the moment I start combat because of that ability, so, it "might" be good for mimes too.

But, as soon as I got the counter/Attack/Free Shot picto's break damage, getting through it's shield wasn't that much of a problem anymore.

the 1.
Skills that do increased damage when the enemy is broken also exist, but their tooltip says "extra damage when t he enemy is stunned", with the stun symbol near the sentence. Monoco's first gradient skill is an example of this.
