Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

The end of Final Fantasy
I believe this is the nail in the coffin for that old washed up series, without a decent entry since FFX. Turn-based combat is dead they said, a thing of the past, it is time to be "modern" and embrace action combat said the FF series producers. And all we got is action combat SLOP for years when it came to rpgs. Now, bow down to your new king Japan, bow down and suckle the toes of your new god!

Eh, FF has been on a steady decline for some time now. This isn't THE nail in the coffin, it's just one of many.

Well, the game is French, so it's on brand.

Waka waka!
Final Fantasy might be taken in a more action-oriented direction in the future, but SE still makes turn-based games.

What did you think of the three SaGa series games released in the last year? You probably played them to support Square Enix continuing to release turn-based games.

EB has one of the most fun turn-based combat systems ever, RS2R7 was a well-received full 3D remake by the same devs who made Trials of Mana, and SF2 is a remaster with added content of a Golden Age SE RPG.

Stop with that crap, seriously. It's not even remotely true, and there's plenty of room in RPG games for different kind of RPGs. just play the ones you like and stop bothering the fans of those that don't interest you, especially if you don't want them to bother you in return.

it's insuferable behaviour like this that give fan communities a bad name. have some respect for other communities.

pretty sure they've still been considered decent games since x. well, maybe not x-2, 13-2 or 13-3. but with the rest i haven't ever really seen much in the way of negativity. sure they may have gone a different direction than the older ones but the ones i've played have been enjoyable enough. except 12, i hated all the characters in that one so i couldn't get into it.
FF ended when Square forced Sakaguchi out. TBH he seems semi-retired these days anyway so not sure FF would be that much better if he'd stayed there anyway. But it was his series and it simply hasn't been the same since he left. The recent ones are FF in name only. Lost Odyssey however was an FF game in everything but name.

Japan still produces a load of great RPGs though. Many of which are better than Clair Obscur. IMO Persona 3, 4, and 5 are all better. I expect 6, if it ever releases, will be too.

Lost Odyssey hammered that nail in 17 and a half years ago.
wym, 12 was enjoyable. didn't live up to x but that's difficult even if you're the same developers

15 was by far the worst FF i've ever played, I got it free and it still wasn't worth continuing. It's sad when the best part of the game was the camaraderie between you and the boys, just the interactions and brotherly love between your companions. everything else was so bad

I heard 16 was actually a huge step forward, but the bad taste of 15 and the fact that I'm only able to play 1 character, and it's just an action game, makes me really not want to play it. I have no desire. Where are the journey-with-pals-to-save-the-world FF games I love so dearly? Dead. Ex33 is really enjoyable in that aspect. I just wish it wasn't so doom and gloom and emotional 95% of the time in its main story (the actual random NPC writing is hilarious).

this is a silly comparison FF to Clair is stupid....sure they are both considered "turn based" games....but there NOT. FF is leaning towards more hack and slash style they just haven't quite tipped the scales to go all out. Clair sure is turn based but really its memory based and learning patterns. you play the enemy until you memorise when to use the appropriate parry/dodge/jump/parry. if you die you simple keep fighting until you have it down. to compare these games to FFX and old school Turn base games such as those your talking about VERY different styles. from FFX to 15 to even 16 those three games alone compared to themselves are VAST differences let alone adding in this games. you want to compare stories okay sure that's personal preference like talking about books we like. You want to talk about the game play NAH these games don't sit in the same houses not even remotely close.

12 is basically marmite.

Seems those that like it, really love it. While those that don't, hate it. I'm in the latter camp and consider it the worst FF game I've ever played (yes, worse than 13!).

8 seems to garner similarly divisive opinions though, so it's not the first time an FF game has done that.

Oddly enough SoP is actually a pretty solid game. You just have to turn off your brain and not take it seriously. It's a fun romp honestly. A really fun romp. Slightly better with friends too.
