(Ending Spoilers) Only 1 thing needed to change about it
If the Verso ending is going to be the defacto good ending from its presentation, then Maelle needed to be the one to decide to leave the painting. If she decides for herself to take the first step in moving on from her grief, then the rest of the game actually has a point; everything that happens was necessary for Maelle to be ok with becoming Alicia again and all of the experiences she had have helped her come to the right choice. It's also a narrative shorthand; if she makes the decision to leave, then it's not jarring to see her happy in the end.

Conversely, because she doesn't make the choice to leave, the rest of the game has been nothing but a pointless obstruction towards her getting help. Every single moment that might have resonated with you between the painted characters is an obstacle to her ultimate well-being. It's jarring to see her being ok in the end because there's nothing between her getting traumatically dream killed by her brother and her demeanor in the epilogue. People thinking that her committing suicide as a response to the events was just as likely as her eventually moving on means that something's off about how the story is being told.

As opposed to all the rest of the world's inhabitants not getting to decide lmao? Or Verso in her ending? Character development doesn't seem to be the focus of the story, more like people clashing as to who gets their way.
Agreed 100% and why I have an issue with that ending.

I always wanted Maelle to leave because that is the most reasonable course of action and the only way for her to actually grow as a character, but she had to make that choice herself to properly come to terms with herself.

By having it forced upon her she does not get to grow as a character and therefore although it is exactly the outcome I wanted for her, it is terribly disappointing and unsatisfying how the game went about achieving it by making Verso a traitor to the cause and betraying Lune and Scielle in the process like they never mattered at all.

Relationships seriously should have played an essential part in getting proper endings.

Also personally I do not perceive her as okay at all, because the Canvas life was her true happiness and in that outcome that very life she truly wanted Gommages in front of her, along with herself (meaning she will never be truly happy ever again).

Verso's ending is the best. Renoir is right all along.
