Game has officially lost me

Is there a specific button for dodging/countering the AOE attacks? What does the golden symbol that appears when enemies attack mean? I am dying and dont even understand whats happening anymore since the mechanics are too rarely used for me to have learned.

You need to press the jump button. And then, press the R2 / RT button to counter attack

Golden symbol means to jump. For doge and parry, focus on the sounds not the actions if you can. You will start to hear a distinct sound for most attacks. It will sound like a whitelisting wind noise, you need to press parry at that moment.

Don't skip the tutorials. I think you're referring to the gold symbol for jumping to avoid attacks. While in the air, you can press another button to counterattack, but it's optional.

Right bumper for anything that's not an attack that turns the screen slow-mo and grey, Right trigger for the grey attacks, X/A for golden attacks

You literally need to go through the curator who teaches you about the jump mechanic before you can leave the manor. Either you forgot or somehow skipped that entire segment.

Gold symbol means jump (X/A) and then you can counterattack right after. As far as Parry's the audio queues for it help immensely, just beware that in late game during some of the optional content, the enemies try to trip you up and attack slower than the audio queue leaving a delay.

Are you in the Gestral labyrinth? I've had to repeat fights up to the double digits to get the proper timing for many attacks, and this jump+counter was an unexpected wrinkle once I got the hang of things.

Persevere. You can do it. If a boomer like me can get it you can.

Maybe you should pay attention when the game tries to tell you something. The jump mechanic was properly explained in the tutorial the first time you enter the Manor and talk to the curator.

But please go on about how the game is unplayable due to dodge / parry /jump mechanics /s

Its extremely easy to forget because until you reach a boss its not that important. Been like 16 or 18 hrs since that tutorial. Before i was simply tanking and using the various means of healing and such.
