[SPOILERS] Something I don't get...
Why was the painted Renoir killing expeditioners? I mean, I get it, he wanted to protect the Paintress, but why not red pill them on who's really doing the gommage and team up to expel the real Renoir?

This part just doesn't make sense to me, feels like clumsy writing, as in they just wanted a villain but couldn't properly flesh out his motivations. And in general, the painted Renoir's dialog irked me a lot as he kept speaking in riddles and omissions all the way through until his death, instead of making an attempt to reason and defuse the increasingly disastrous situation.

No one knows?
Probably because if even Simon despite his divine strength couldn't expel Renoir underneath the Monolith, then surely no mere expeditioner ever could. And after so many years the Paintress being their mortal nemesis, it is doubtful any of them would be willing to understand her true purpose and that they can't escape the Gommage.

Renoir truly is right, by killing them it is a kindness because imagine knowing your entire existence is meaningless and that the only option you have is to give up and die. At least this way they die believing they were making a change.

A far better question is why didn't Aline simply write a message, rather than numbers. Maelle wrote one just fine and her skill pales in comparison to Aline's or Clea's, but it was probably for the very same reason. Better to leave them with some hope of tomorrow, than steal it away,

Easier to kill them than to dialogue. If he can wipe them out easily, what help will they be against the real Renoir?

Because he's being held under the monolith for a reason. Killing the painters just expels them from the canvas, if they by some miracle managed to kill the real renoir he can just go back without being trapped anymore and just gommage everyone unrestricted.

With the paintress gone, he was able to wipe it. If he was gone won't she also be free and prepare better for an act 2. Its definitely better than letting them keep trying to kill her which would result in the end of the world. Like the place is still getting wiped out, the current situation wasnt tenable.
