The story is the focus in this game so there will be a lot more cutscenes and the world does not truely open up till Act 2 which is about 10 - 12 hours in depending on your pace.
If you dont enjoy what the game is currently offering then its not for you, its that simple.
Also i disagree about the tutorials, all the tutorials come exactly at the point when those functions/skills unlock.
I thought it was one of the better ingame tutorials i experienced in a long time.
Well, combat and exploring becomes a lot more prominent over the course of the game and there will be a lot of mechanics introduced to make it more interesting but at its core the game is what you experience in the first few hours. Story scenes with some exploring and combat inbetween. Later when you get a overworld map and can explore more freely and also do side content it may feel different to you but if you are not invested in the story yet and find the combat "boring" like you wrote i dont think the later parts of the game will change your mind.
The heart of the game are the characters and the story and if neither is gripping you then its most likely not the game for you.
But I'd still say you should probably refund it, because the story is freaking amazing, and if you feel nothing, then it's not for you.
Narratively, if you didn't like the events of the prologue, you probably won't care about the story.
Gameplay, if you don't like what you see in the first zone after arriving on the continent (after the beach massacre and the woods level), you probably won't care about the gameplay.
If you're even thinking the way you're talking about it after two hours, I strongly suspect this is not the game for you.
There is a lot of gameplay here. Personally, I think the story is the real draw for me. But it is fun gameplay to me. Not something I want to do forever, but it's pretty fun and something I don't get very often from games.
The whole package, feels like it has most of the sensibilities of the PS2 era JRPGs. Obviously, better visuals, and the timing elements that we saw some of in like Super Mario RPG and some of the Final Fantasies (particularly VIII and X).
After the first few areas, the balance of time in game is skewed heavily towards playing it though, read: exploration and combat. Still, it will be punctuated by spots of cutscenes and dialogue that can, at times, drag on awhile. I will say that the script is possibly the best I have seen in a game, it's damn good.
This game; however, grabbed my attention immediately. You pretty much know immediately if a story is for you, even if others are yelling from the roof tops GOTY.
If you dont like the story now, you are not gonna magically like it later. Its a lot more of the same. Melancholic
