Haircuts and costumes? Where?

Ehrm when I am outside big world map I am in the dungeon and there is no mini map!!!! How am I suppose to know where to go and where these costumes and haircuts are? This is confusing. I have got to the village with these little puppets and have the same costume and the same haircut......
