Gradient damage wants normal parry to counter?
I don't get it?

No, there is a special parry. I can't remember what it's called but normal parry is right bumper and grandiant parry is right trigger.

In the Renoir fight the masks he summons do gradient damage (blackhole damage icon) but will only parry through a normal parry, how am I meant to know what the nuance is if its inconsistent like this? Its like when learning jump counters and the game describes an attack as "does a jump attack" yet that wants a normal parry until you learn to only ever do it for the gold square indicator... kinda like how poorly lumiens were tutorialized as actually being separate from pictos... I still don't know if i'm meant to normal parry or gradient parry the vanish attack...

I honestly didn't know what you were talking about at first because I one shot him. But I went back and watched a video of the fight. If it's the actual blackhole attack, it doesn't look like a gradient attack at all. And as far as I can tell he doesn't have any that he does. Is that attack the one you are referring to?
