Act 1.... (HEAVY SPOILERS!!!!!)
why the ♥♥♥♥ did you all kill off Gustave like that? I get it's shocking but my god I went from obsessively playing this game for the first time in a long time I've felt like this for a game (last one was probably yakuza like a dragon) to now its really put a damper on my enjoyment replacing Gustave with Jon Snow....

Man you all got us to like his character and he was the player character... not many games kill your main character and just expect you to care and keep going this is rough. :steamsad:

dont want any spoilers outside of what ive posted but my god man. I had to vent. I slept on this and then after working today got back on and it's just not the same now.

Yes it is very sad.

The game has lots of sad moments, but it is very fun to experience. I hope you give it another try.

He's not the main character though.

My main character was Lune. Gustave lost his main character role after what he tried to pull after the landing. He miraculously survives a massacre and instead of proceeding with their plan to meet at the tree to check if anyone else survived he decided to unalive as soon as possible. If he wants to be gone let him be gone.

People identify Gustave as the main character initially because you start the game in his POV, you spend the camp from his POV, you write in his journal, etc. They fed him all the main character energy, and basically established him as the main character... and you were meant to feel that way about him if you did. It's intentional, and frankly it's kinda genius. Deleting him from the story like they did really turns the whole thing on its head and makes the player rethink a lot of things, while also experiencing genuine sensations of grief. It also sets up Verso to be immediately unlikable, which is again, intended and brilliantly executed. The fact that threads have been constantly popping up mourning Gustave and/or being angry about his death while also knee-jerk reacting to Verso negatively, proves the writers really knew what they were doing.

Honestly I massively complained about it too at the time. While part of me still think Gustave should have died further into the story. Verso is just way too smooth lol he grew heavily on me. Would rather have a party members of Gestalts bantering with Verso at this point.
Я плакал, он ведь такой душка был, просто нет слов 😭

It get the logic, but intentionally making the audience reinvest is asking a lot. Why invest in any of the characters at that rate? "To see where the story is going" is the obvious answer - but why bother if there isn't going to be a payoff for the investment? Eh, guess I'm a sap - feels like Gustav deserved better than to be killed off and replaced in all but name. "You're supposed to be sad and angry" - I don't buy that. If the game just cut to black after act 1 I'd be sad and angry as well - that doesn't make it a good choice.
