God I love/hate Monoco
I love the character, cause I quite enjoy him in the team and cutscenes etc. But I absolutely hate how you acquire abilities for him... Why did it have to be such an annoying system...

Yeah it gets tedious a bit, personally I wish he would gain abilities without having to be an active party member.

From the start I decided Lune, Maelle and Sciel will be my main team so switching Sciel out all the time is a bit tedious at times, but despite all that Monoco really is fun and does absurd amounts of damage.

Exactly, needing him active in the party makes it even worse. And almost all the abilities I want for him seem to be pretty late on, so it's not like I can casually overpower the fights either. Only down the line when my others are at high enough power.

I've got Lune as main dmg, Sciel for support and Maelle back dmg with some filling the gaps. Generally works pretty well now into Act 3. But I'd like to swap Maelle for Monoco to switch it up. But anytime I want to start grinding his abilities I just lose all interest... Maybe, maybe I'll do it when Lune reaches the giga damage later. Currently in 60s for level.
My solution was: Play with him in first team right from the get go. Continue playing as normal, making a build based on the current boss. I'm still missing a few, but I didn't go out of my way to obsessively collect them all. So many enemies repeat that there is almost no need to go back and farm old enemies.

Yeah, his system is actually pretty convenient if you commit to using him at least a little bit everywhere as soon as he joins. At the very least, using him in the Monolith will give you a good head start on the foot collection.
A bit tedious but it's only once per mob. I think he's a really interesting character and a lot of fun as compensation.
