World map and area map exploration question

Does the story take me through all the areas/locations that can be accessed from the world map, or are some optional?

If they are optional, will I be locked out of the areas if I only progress through the story, or will I be able to return to all areas/locations at any point in the game?

Mostly optional. Areas marked with "Danger" are very interesting and rewarding, though. After finishing the main story, you can continue exploration or initiate a new game plus at any time (in any expedition flag, not in the main menu).

Some areas are just platforming challenges with rewards, other areas you'll find lore, other have challenging bosses.

Yes, the boundaries continously fall away with Esquies abilities gained throughout the story and you can always return to basicly every location.
