Regarding Gestrals
With a lot of things in this game being so French they crap croissants, a number of the enemies are also parodically French, most notably the violent mimes and sentient petanque balls.

I get the feeling that the Gestrals are also a French reference of some kind, but my French is not at the level where I can say for sure. Can someone comment regarding their theme or their name? Or is the entire brush-theme just a reference to the overall painting theme of the game?

They're pretty much walking, talking paintbrushes (as the one in front of Grolga's hut is even mortified of going bald). However the story reveals the very essence of their being later.

I recommend thoroughly exploring the beginning of ACT III if you wish to know more, as it is a very important yet missable story detail.

Maybe chivalry, because of their armor & tendency to duel, and also "geste" in french is "a move" but has a secondary meaning from medieval time it's "a noble move".

If you went through the end of the game we know Monnoko & Moko are the dogs' family Dessendre. And in fact Gestrals could all be dogs when you look at it.
