How to Choose Target Character for Items?

I have not been able to figure this out yet, especially for defense, recov, and consumable items. It just picks a character and I seem to have no options to select self, or another.

This is after you select an item. although It's not too obvious that you're already picking a character phase to use it on after.

Following up on this, still cant find the cooresponding keyboard binding for this action. I assumed arrow keys, nope. Number, F, IJKL, etc nothing so far does dpad selections for m&kb

Should be A and D.

It automatically goes to the middle character on the party. Just choose a different one. You know how you can select a different enemy to attack? Do the same thing for your potions, left or right.
