Was enjoying the game, just reached that point. I don't actually see the point of continuing the game when that specific person dies, it destroys the whole narrative motivation for the game for me. It's poor writing. Like why show me his entire story to end it after chapter 1. I barely know or have any motivation to play the others. I know 1 really likes protocol, 1 doesn't like swimming and the final one seems to be the actual main character but for some reason we know nothing about at this point other than her relationship with Guastav. This is a narrative piece that works in media like the walking dead since your an observer not a player. As a player this ruins the experience, it's like a narrative emergency stop that jolts you out of the experience and you car stalled and you need to get it running again. Now I need to somehow reingage with this new character knowing the intro has nothing to do with him and he's actually been allowing that to happen. No way I would say it's more than an 8 now, heavily overrated after this poor choice of writing. Gameplay and visual are good but a writing team that doesn't understand game narrative Vs movie narrative.

I don’t like when this type of things happen either. Barely works in movies and TV shows and definitely has no place in a game where we find connections to the characters we play as.

I guess I'm not the only one that's going to drop the game because they decided to kill the protagonsit which you get attached to. Nothing against the devs and writers. I just hate and dislike this kind of plot twist and storytelling. Shame I was really really liking it and having fun.

The person that dies actually isn't the main character tho.

The blue whale doesn't have a ♥♥♥♥♥ as big as the guys who dropped this game because of Act 1's end.

I was about to say that, you can dont like what happen but that dont make it a "bad decision" or "bad writing", Its only a personal think (valid but its not the global true). Also the act 2 and 3, even the secondaries missions explains it and make all the sense

This post just reeks of sheer ignorance. It's their story, not yours. How can you say it's a poor writing choice if you haven't played it through yet and don't know how it resolves or if it even pays off?

It adds emotional value for the players who were invested in them and gives the other characters new motivations to keep pushing on and opens up opportunities for other characters development, especially Maelle. There's some truly great scenes following the end of act one and before the first boss of act 2, it's not meaningless.

Jesus, show a little patience and integrity.

hated it and still hate it, but it was well done in my opinion and I had to live with it, life is full of such surprises

Some of you are such snowflakes holy molly, god forbid the writers shake the tables a little. Play through the whole game before you decide if the writing is poor or not.
Clair Obscure makes use of the "false protagonist" narrative device. It's meant to pull the rug out from under you, yes, it's meant to upset you. It's not wrong to feel upset. What do you think people felt when Ned Stark was killed towards the end of the first A Song of Fire and Ice (Game of Thrones) novel (or on the show)?

The thing is, the game does hand out clues even in act I that while Gustave was your introduction into this world he is not the main character. Not even remotely. Not at all.

Why do yout think Gustave's skill tree is so limited? Why can Gustave never use any of the perks on any of the weapons?

Just keep playing.

The game will pull even more rugs out from under you. Act 1 is but a trifle compared to what will follow.

If you stop now you will miss out on the actual bombshell reveals. And you will never know what this is all really about any why Gustave ultimately does not matter at all.

DO NOT judge the story after act 1. Yes, the story in this game challenges you a bit more than most other games usually do. But the reveals are quite something.

But you're wrong on who the main character is.

So the character death actually means something to the player.

Think about other games that kill characters and do extremely emotional scenes to try and sell the impact of their death and the player is just like "I don't care, I didn't even know that person" they can understand the story and know why the characters on screen are upset, but the player themself has no real care and connection beyond very surface level empathy.

For example, I bet you didn't really "care" at the very start when Gustave was about to kill himself, you had no connection as you spent barely any time with him, so the threat of his death didn't matter so much.

There is a good reason that the Aerith death in FF7 tended to stand out above others, because she was a fully fleshed out playable character with a full story and 20 / 30 hours of playtime to let the connections be built before the death can make it's impact.

TL:DR - I couldn't disagree more when you say it's "bad writing"

well I went snowboarding after Aerith died
