Wasn't this game developed in France? how can it be a Japanese RPG if it was made in Europe its nonsensical might as well call skyrim a jrpg too.

it is a great game, being a jrpg or a wrpg has nothing to do with it
a JRPG doesn't have to be done in Japan to be a JRPG. It's a genre, not a geographic label.

If tomorrow a japanese studio launch a "Skyrim-like", it won't be a JRPG even if it's a RPG made in japan. It will just be a RPG. The J in JRPG only tels you what kind of mecanics it will have, and those are the mecanics that where created and popularised by Japan companies.

If you are american and you cook Japanese food, it won't make it american food...

The earliest documented use of the term "JRPG" (Japanese Role-Playing Game) appears to be from January 1992, in an archived internet forum conversation preserved on Google Groups. In this discussion, a user named Isao Takeda used the term to contrast Japanese RPGs with Western RPGs, noting differences in gameplay and art style
Yes, but it can also classify games that are inspired by the jrpg titles and is not the only game that isn't from Japan to be considered a jrpg. That's the point I meant. Whether it was something said in 1992 or not, there are plenty of sources that counter that. So I'm not sure what else to tell you.
there arent any sources that predates Isao coining of the term and jrpg is defined as a sub genre of rpgs, location doesnt matter

jrpg isnt defined as a sub genre of rpgs its definition varies by author as a previous user comented two of them one validating my point that jrpg is an umbrella term containing a multitude of genres

JRPG is a genre defined by certain narrative and gameplay conventions. Clair Obscur is definitely a JRPG.

I’ll mention just two of them but there are more,

- JRPG historically and still occasionally represent combat with two teams standing neatly at opposite sides of a field like in a volleyball match, running to the opposite team to physically attack … then running back!

It’s unrealistic and silly, a relic from the 8 bit era when such abstractions where necessary to circumvent technical constraints, but it has been internalized by players and devs and easy to implement so it’s still used.

Western RPGs of the era generally used tactical combat (the SSI D&D games, Ultima series, Fallout 1 and 2) or first person (Dungeon master, Might & Magic, etc)

- JRPG tend to have a very controlled gear, power and story progression to ensure the player doesn’t get lost and can win his battles, besides optional bosses. Western RPGs, not so much.

It's a JRPG, made by French peepo.
The term JRPG isn't ideal, but that's what we have to differentiate it to "Western rpg".

"JRPG" are usually linear with a set of pre made characters.
"Western RPG" are usually non linear with a character(s) you create (or a BUNCH of characters you can hire).

The principal difference lies in the linearity vs non linearity, because both can be turn or action based concerning combat.

elden ring is a jrpg, it doesnt follow any of your points as to what is a jrpg, nor does something like etrian oddissey or yakuza, those are still jrpgs despite their different genres, so no your definition is incorrect, just because clair obscur has many of the traditional jrpg tropes doesnt make it one

From my pov, Elden Ring is an Action game, with very bare bone rpg mechanics, just like all Souls games (doesn't mean they are bad, I've played all of them, great games).
Never felt like I was playing a jrpg, or a western rpg for that matter, just an action game with a very unforgiving combat system.
