This game is NOT a "JRPG"
Wasn't this game developed in France? how can it be a Japanese RPG if it was made in Europe its nonsensical might as well call skyrim a jrpg too.
Thats not to say thats a positive or negative moniker theres absolutely awful jrpgs as well as amazing wrpgs but why call it something it isnt it makes no sense

JRPG is just a subgenre, it doesn't matter if a game is developed in Japan, America, France or even the first PC to be found in some African country or some aboriginal tribe.

Japan had a unique spin on the RPG mechanics, which were coined as JRPG. Any game that uses those same mechanics by definition is a JRPG.

For the same reason why we call some games „arcade” even if a game doesn’t come from arcades. Or a souls game even if it’s not literally Dark Souls 4. Or CRPG even if all RPGs are on computers/consoles. Or how Counter Strike 2 is not MMO.
Or how we agree to not use Anime in literal sense even if Peppa Pig is literally anime.
New York Pizza used to be a pizza made in NY but the unique style became a name for a „genre” of pizzas made around the world.

I will repeat myself
JRPG= JRPG like
Souls = souls like
Arcade = arcade like
NY pizza = New York like pizza.

why do you keep posting this? this is wrong. you're making a VERY common logical fallacy called an "Post hoc ergo propter hoc"

all water makes things wet
not all things that make you wet are water

just because all souls games are souls like, that does not imply all soul's like are souls game.

nioh is soul's like. nioh is not souls.
therefore while A leads to it being B, B does NOT necessarily lead to it being A

there is a clear difference b/t saying this game is a JRPG and saying it's a JRPG-like. those are two entirely different things.

Sometimes in naming conventions a thing is given two meanings. For example a person who is Jewish can be a person who is religiously jewish OR a person who lives or lived in Israel. similarly some people refer to ANY game that is a turn based RPG as being a JRPG, while others, myself included, only refer to turn based games developed in japan as a JRPG. both are right because the term itself is so loosely defined

it does NOT however imply all JRPG-likes are JRPGs

At some point JRPG became a genre.
You picked souls but ignored arcade, anime, crpg and NY pizza for convenience.

Ok, so what are those mechanics?
Predefined story without branching, predefined characters without char creation and you play as a team.

Wow so that is all it takes to be a jrpg?
Pretty much.
It is very much a jrpg. Looks like a new ff game really with all the flashy sworplay and whatnot. This is actually a FF rip off honestly.

Because JRPG is a specific style where units are placed in line and got fixed position being unable to move. Character progression is often greatly simplified compared to western RPGs.
Its not. Tell me what etrian odyssey and xenoblade have in common other than anime

JRPG is a term born in a very different time and mostly denotes a "Final Fantasy" type RPG experience with a turn based battle system, team of characters, over world map, long/epic story, and etc. For example you wouldn't call Zelda a JRPG even though it is in fact an RPG from Japan.

I also wouldn't call Skyrim a JRPG or even an ARPG because it doesn't fit those other hallmarks of the JRPG genre. I hear your gripe though, I do wish they called a French-JRPG or even an FRPG and I wish more "countries" would do games within the JRPG genre but producing it through there unique cultural lens.

Like in JRPGs you always get a sort of Japanese "arcade" inspired shopping experience and its so Japanese. But in an American-JRPG you've got to do malls and strip malls cause thats the US culture, lol.

But yeah, it's a JRPG cause thats the genre but we should add country of origin to it too because it's awesome to see what the French did here, it's delightful.
Not a genre, its was born to negatively refer to japanese rpgs that were deroved from earlier american rpgs, its a derogatory term

Not even remotely equivalent and ive already debunked the whole greek yougurt thing
So we all agree then if it looks like a fish its probably a fish. This game is %100 from ff games and clearly inspired by them.

Ahh, reminds me of my favorite JRPG series.

A Plague Tale: Innocence
A Plague Tale: Requiem

Has everything that makes a JRPG a JRPG: predefined story, predefined characters, no character creation, lots of teamwork.

Also developed by a French studio, making it even more JRPG.

Not an RPG. It would also be an Action RPG if it had exp, lvls, weapons, skills unlock and builds. You also generally control a single character and not 3 or 4.

You keep posting vague definitions and features of what jrpgs have like exp party systems turn based etc, which is meaningless and has been thouroughly debunked earlier, whatever your bias for what a jrpg should be like is is wrong.

Dear god Tasty people are retarded. For it to be a jrpg it has to be made by Japanese people, and jrpg isn't a genre but something used to cover all roleplaying types of games from japan that are made by the Japanese.
People are stubborn, they have it in their head that it must be x so they simply cant accept the fact that they are mistaken, i feel its also animosity against japanese media, as in because its anime its icky, like darksouls cant possibly be a jrpg because it doesnt have anime waifus and those games are for losers(or somthing in that ballpark)

Debunked how? Vague how?
The definition of JRPG exists.
If people see no difference between lets say FF9 and Baldur’s gate or oblivion then it’s on them. I see a clear difference.

theres 38 pages of replies, i recommend reading before posting
yes their genres are different, which has nothing to do with jrpgs or wrpgs
