This game is NOT a "JRPG"
Wasn't this game developed in France? how can it be a Japanese RPG if it was made in Europe its nonsensical might as well call skyrim a jrpg too.
Thats not to say thats a positive or negative moniker theres absolutely awful jrpgs as well as amazing wrpgs but why call it something it isnt it makes no sense

This "argument" again?

So to sum up this topic.
If Expedition 33 is NOT a JRPG because it is not a "Japanese Role Playing Game"
Then by that same exact logic, mario, ice climbers, bubble bobble, fzero, etc. Are all absolutely JRPGS because you play a role in all of those games. As such they are "role playing games" and they were made in Japan which makes them 100% objectively "JRPGs" as well...

Now if you don't agree with this 100% objective statement. Than the argument that "JRPGs" need to be made in Japan is thrown out the window completely. Or at least at that point you are simply making a subjective argument with no objectivity at all.

In which case this entire topic is just people throwing around STRICTLY subjective statements about what they believe a "JRPG" represents...

That is totally fine by the way, but don't try to purport yourself are being "objective" when you very obviously are not...

No thanks. There's plenty of articles all over the internet. Go figure it out.
Because you can’t. All you would do is post some vague umbrella terms that wouldn’t be anymore clear than calling Zelda games an RPG

Like this. Vague descriptions of what a JRPG is “supposed” to be.

JRPGS:
* Generally linear stories
* Usually have a world map with map traversal options (boat/airship/etc...)
* Usually turn based
* Characters already are established with personalities and exist, as opposed to making your own "blank slate" type character.
* Usually NOT open world, they might have big areas to explore, but there is an order of operations on what you have access to and when.
* Usually party based
* Storytelling is focused on cutscenes, dialogue, very direct, and full of grandeur.

Ok, cool. Weird way to tell the world you don't know how to look stuff up. Life must be hard for you.
Weird way to show your intelligence, or lack there of.

Yikes.

Yep, subjective arguments, just like every single argument made in this entire topic...

thats why dragons dogma, mario rpg, persona, dark souls, atelier, tales of, final fantasy, dragon quest, xenoblade vagrant historia the last story pandoras tower bravely default yakuza etc etc etc etc are all jrpgs
Japanese may call all their animated movies anime but we don't consider all their animations Anime. Same with JRPG. We use these two terms for their unique type of animations and RPG games.

Ok great, using the objective logic in this topic:
Expedition 33 is NOT a JRPG while Mario, Fzero, Bubble Bobble, and Ice Climbers are all JRPGS.

From a purely objective standpoint I absolutely agree...

jrpg isnt a term used by japan at all, it means nothing and so its worthless to use, same with wrpg,.
anime is whatever animation created in japan, so no avatar is not an anime

In all seriousness, I fully agree with you if you stand by the above.

Now subjectively I do not agree, but from an objective standpoint, I got nothing that would prove otherwise.

I just wanted to illustrate how being objective in this case can somewhat obfuscate things when you look at the big picture of certain arguments being made.

Someone said etrian odyssey is a jrpg? That game is a anime style dungeon crawler not a jrpg.
the duality of man
@azulmagia realizes they are diametrically oposed and it doesnt fit the common incorrect definition of what jrpg is suppoused to be.
the other poster prob has no idea of what it is or just because it has anime characters he thinks it must be a jrpg, funny stuff

clearly not enough to tell the difference between a jrpg and a dcrpg
