What's the deal with this?

The area is pretty big, and looks like these were supposed to be other things. Cut content? Redesign to just stick everything at the entrance?

It looks like there should be more going on here than there is. Anyone know if these do anything in NG+?

I figured those were other trials. Clear this first painting and it opens up new ones.

Nothing changed in NG+ so hopefully there will be a DLC with a extra story + Endless tower
