The reserve team is only called in if your original team dies, then the game asks you if you want to send in the reserve and continue.
Do I understand you correctly?... so you do not REALLY want to use Maelle unless in those cases some enemy has shields and then you want to user her shield breaker ability?
Well, you can't ever pick and choose a character. BUT there are several ways you can try to work around the fixed character order.
a) you can always skip a turn and switch to the next character in line, you can do this until Maelle is the one to attack, of course Maelle needs to be on the team and must not be the reserve
b) later on there are pictos that let you play more than once per turn, Maelle is also super, super, super powerful and even if you may not like her for whatever reason in those instances where an enemy has 5 or 6 shields etc you could skip turns with the other characters, then let Maelle play and with the picto that lets you play twice in a row (plus pictos that give you lots of AP) Maelle can get rid of the shields first and then finish the enemies with her second attack, this is of course only viable much later in the game - or you use the other characters to break the shields with free aim (later on you get AP very easily to do this) and then Maelle finishes them, again, she is SUPER powerful with the right build and weapon, I would not ignore her
c) there are also pictos that make destroying shields easier with free aim (take down two shields per shot etc), you do not necessarily need Maelle's skill to remove shields if you really do not want to use her, some skills also give you 4-8 hits and each hit removes a shield. Again, this is of course only possible a bit later in the game when you have unlocked those skills
Maelle isn't bad just not as good as my other characters are at the moment.
Currently in Act 2. I'm thinking perhaps later she may be alot better.
Maelle can easily be the biggest DPS machine in the game. Does she have the weapon that lets her start in Virtuose stance? You get it in the Gestral arena if you picked Maelle for the fight and if you picked someone else to fight in the arena the other characters can get their unique weapon from beating the village chief (NOT an easy fight and only for high level characters, not before Act III I would say).
I have not minmaxed anything really and haven't even looked up any specific builds but in my game Maelle eventually is able to deal 8 million damage (damage cap is only lifted after Act II, before that you are stuck with 9,999). She can obliterate everything. Of course eventually any character you have can obliterate everything. But Maelle can do crazy damage.
Edit: The burn build can also avoid stance dancing, if your so inclined due to Brulerum 100% crit while stanceless
TBF, I think every character can be stupid strong, when built right, Maelle is just far easier to break that point.
Making her a heaving hitter. I also like how Verso can use skill to give AP to ally's. I'm sure Malle can be OP, but I like my team right now. I actually did play Maelle for a while just didn't care for her. Damage was fine just overall didn't care for her compared to the others. Although perhaps I will change my mind later during Act 3. Not against ever playing her just don't care to right now.
I don't think you should ever need to justify yourself! :-) This is your game, play it any way you like with the characters you enjoy the most!
I never cared for Monoco, so I never used him. It's ok. I originally sidelined Sciel because of Verso's and Maelle's importance to the story until I tired of Verso and switched him out for Sciel whom I enjoy more really, so now it's Maelle, Lune and Sciel in my game.
About Maelle, she can be lots of fun, she can also synergise beautifully with Lune (both can add to the burn counter dramatically and Maelle can switch to the Virtuose stance as soon as an enemy is burning via skill and eventually Maelle can do crazy damage with Virtuose stance and various pictos), also I felt having Maelle on the team makes sense given her importance to the overall story (eventually), it would have been odd to never have her on the team but in almost all of the cutscenes (eventually).
This game is about her really, is what I am saying. Give the poor girl a chance again maybe... but if she doesn't work for you... that's ok. Play the game any way you like.
Although maybe it will push Maelle more into the lead role later. Then might end up feeling the same way as you do.
Sorry if it came across as criticizing you for not using her, I was more so hoping to give a different perspective and showcase a particular build I like for her.
