Safe spoiler for your question:
She is Maelle/Alicia's mother.
Further spoiler:
She's not the one killing everyone, if you continue on you learn this pretty quick. IF you are still confused read the next spoiler
Really further spoiler:
Renoir is the one erasing everyone. The Paintress wanted to stop him but she can't because he trapped her in the Monolith. All she can do is try to warn people so she paints the number every year to show people how much time they have left. Renoir can only muster power to erase the oldest creations at once, thus why he takes the oldest people every year
Also, Renoir and The Paintress (Aline) are married.
This is bigger spoiler so be careful :) It's explained, sort of but it's still hard to follow for some.
Renoir and Aline are married in real life (real life in the game I mean). They are painters. Named after real life French painter Renoir and his real wife Aline. Their family are painters who can create worlds in canvas that come to life, sort of like Gods. Well a tragic event happens, the fire which was caused by the war between the painters and writers, which kills Verso (her son, Maelle/Alicia's brother) which makes Aline go into grief so she goes inside the painting to live. The painting was Verso's creation so she goes there to live with what is the last thing left of him. Renoir wants to get her out so he goes in and they have a huge fight and she refuses to leave and end up basically trapping each other inside. The only way he can get her to leave is to erase all the creations (people, Gestral, etc) so that she will leave on her own. The Expeditioners want to stop the Paintress because they think she is the one killing everyone. However, Renoir doesn't want them to get to her and kill her that's why he tries to stop people. He also knows they are all "fake" just creations so he has no remorse for killing people. Eventually they kill The Paintress, and then Renoir is able to erase everyone but he loses his wife.
This one is a little confusing to me but this is my take, not sure if 100%
Yes Aline is the Paintress. Also Maelle and Alicia are the same. Alicia is the real daughter, Maelle was a painted version that was given the conciousness of Alicia but able to live a full normal life from birth. That's why she kept having visions and remembering things and couldn't remember why. They are able to paint themselves in the painting and sort of have a consciousness in there. But, they are also able to ACTUALLY go into the painting, but I think something happens to them causing them to decay over time or something, or be shells of themselves. I am not sure why or how really. The other people who look normal, were not real. I can't recall if you actually kill Renoir when you beat him, or just defeat him. It's possible he wasn't killed only defeated. But also it could just have been a painted conscious of the real Renoir. Not really sure.
I'd like explanation on this one too. I think maybe Renoir was in the painting but as a painted version and got trapped so he couldn't leave to allow his real body to regain consciousness. So when he died, it pushed him out of the painting. Then he was able to repaint himself a new body (or come in as himself) and that's why you see him again in a new younger form, I think. That would explain why the people didn't vanish immediately after you beat Renoir or even through the Paintress fight. Renoir had been moved back to the real world, and likely repainting or re-entering the canvaas
But I think when REAL people go in the painting over time they decay and kind of rot out..I think?
the real renoir is the curator and the real aline is the paintress. they both look like that. it seems to have something to do with losing the concept of yourself because you stay in the painting for too long
Aline created their own versions of the family, so the Alicia, Verso and Renoir we see in Act I and II are fake painted versions. The Paintress wasnt the one erasing all the people, it was the Real Renoir, since he needed to erase everyone to make Aline leave. The Fake Renoir tries to stop the expeditioners because if the Paintress dies, he dies too. And he did die.
The real Renoir was trapped inside the canvas as the Curator. Only when the Paintress/Aline was defeated he was able to erase everyone and get them both out of the canvas.
And yes, if the real painters spend too much time inside the canvas using their powers they get corrupted and end up dying, like what happened to Aline and what will happen to Alicia/Maelle according to her ending.
Yeah, I forgot about the Curator being. Duh. That just leaves me with more questions. Why is he helping you to get to the paintress if he doesn't want to and why is the painted version doing different lol I am confused now. I still got most of the rest correct anyway. This story is so good but it's still so confusing :)
Yah, you repeated some of the stuff I said. Good thread, I like it. The story is awesome albeit a little confusing. I haven't gotten to the endings yet but I assumed what you said, about the whole choice thing and that if they stay inside they will like, fade away eventually.
This is not really accurate....
Aline is NOT killed. The paintress is defeated which sends Aline back into the real world (she eventually returns and tries to help the others with stopping Renoir). With Aline out of the way at first there is nothing stopping Renoir anymore to erase everyone. Which he does. Everyone but Verso and Maelle gommage. But that also restores all of Maelle's memories who had been painted over by her mom (repainted) when she entered the canvas, which is why she was born into the canvas world as a baby without any memories. But the second Maelle remembers she is Alicia she also remembers her own painter powers and paints Lune and Sciel etc back to life.
Things are a lot more complicated, because Clea, the other sister, also plays her part in all this (she created the Nekrons that trap chroma etc).
The Renoir you see (with the scar) is the painted version by Aline, i.e. a doppelganger like Verso, the real Renoir was trapped beneath the Monolith (you can go there and find out all about it) and the Curator is his manifestation in the canvas world. Once Aline is expelled from the canvas the painted Renoir is also gone, Renoir is free and the Curator turns into the real Renoir.
Whether the people in the canvas world are "fake" is not said in the game. The game wants you to draw your own conclusions. Based on all we see and witness you can easily argue that the canvas people are real in all the things that matter. They feel, they love, they grieve, they die, they invent, they bear children, they live. I consider the canvas something like the magic equivalent of a computer simulation where the digital people inside all have a simulated, but for all intents and purposes "real", consciousness. So no, I do not think the canvas humans are fake. They are real in all the ways that actually matter.
