also conversely, i'd say that the other characters also take multiple turns, or building off other chars, to set up their big dmg nukes. so really gustave is no different in that regard.
Personality-wise? Yeah he kinda sucks. Might be my bias against male MCs, but Lune would have made a better MC IMO. Lune has been fitting the leader role so much better (As of the watery area, I've not gotten that far in so maybe Gustav will get better later.)
Like people mentioned his main role is quickly breaking enemies (especially with some nice Pictos)
From my experience with the game all characters have a use and can carry the team if invested in. Gustave is your very basic hit, break and never die character. It's not flashy but it's very effective.
