If you start the fight with firststrike (not the picto, i mean with the shot to engage the encounter) then it ignores your speed and the first strike picto since it sets you at the top of the list (with some exceptions like the mimes). How the game sets your position for the start in this case that i don't know.

In short, the picto with first strike is only good if you don't start the fight with the engaging shot or if it is a fight that startes after a cutscene.
Yeah same. Like I had a build that needed Lune to go first, to avoid using first strike I made sure Lune had the highest speed stat and sometimes she would go first, other times it was the character with the 2nd highest speed.

Then in NG+ I used first strike picto for Lune and I'm still getting instances where gustave goes first, he doesn't even have the highest speed, it's Lune.

Ok i Fixed it, so first strike only works when the enemy hit u first, in order to choose who in your party goes first u have to manually select the party members in that order.

This does mean that if you have high speed, you actually go twice before the enemy right? Even better than starting the battle with an attack

I doubt it, my highest speed is with Sciel and never got two turns in a row, but for some reason i manage to hit 4 times with Verso and he doesnt even has Agility leveled.

But you can get a picto(cheater) that lets u play twice ur turn.
-->If you hit an enemy to start the encounter, the characters ALWAYS go in order of how you recruit them. Example: Remove everyone but character A. Now add C, then B.

Order is then A, C, B regardless of speed and/or gear. ( !! Order only applies for the first turn !! )

-->If you start an encounter normally, characters go in order by speed and/or gear that overwrites speed.

Tl;dr: If you want to have Maelle always going first, regardless of "surprising" the enemy or starting encounters normally, remove everyone from party except her-> Add them back and make sure she has the highest speed stat.

Yeah, this confused me too. You have to actually re-arrange your party in the menu, which seems like a hidden mechanic (as the UI doesn't actually show your party's order). E.g. I want MC, Lune, Maelle in this order for my combos to work, so I have to remove everyone but the MC in the menu, then re-add Lune, then finally Maelle.
I tried to rearrange and to manually start the fight with the character I wanted. Neither worked
