Don't neglect weapons/pictos/lumina/skills
For the longest time I'd been complacent about much of them since the same basic skill set has worked for so long (plus when you just want to experience more of the story, building 5 characters can take a bit). But eventually you get to the point where not even basic grinding and optimal attributes are enough. Even if you can make 90% of your parries, fights are gonna take forever if you're doing no damage.

that is true. I prefer first explore without fights in danger locations, pick up free mats and pictos then fight.
When i fight with Renoir in monolit i had weapons lvls at 10-12, but in monilit there is plenty mats to upgrade waepons soo i just go back to camp and make him with my first atremp with every hit on cap dmg, main party weapons lvl 20+

When I realized weapons will automatically level up just from killing enemies, I chose to almost never level them up manually. So once a bunch of them became 15 after working my way towards Renoir round 2, I finally relented and leveled them up myself.

I prefer to find an enemy who drops actual upgrade materials.
There is a night and day difference between a random weapon upgraded to lvl12-15 and your best weapons upgraded to lvl19.
