The game is inspired by a hidden gem.
The main inspiration for the game was apparently The Lost Odyssey. The personal best game of all time of the main director.

It’s criminal how little known that game was.
So I’m super happy this game is so successful.

It really shows too. I was doing the Monoco's Station/Old Lumiere portion of the game last night, and it kept reminding me of Gohtza. It's a real shame LO is forever stuck in Xbox jail.

Never heard of it, apparently it's XBox 360, never had one. Microsoft should release it on PC
I only recently stumbled upon a let's play of Lost Odyssey by pure chance, and while I never had an xbox, I'm surprised that it flew under my radar for almost 20 years now.

For the time it came out, it seems genuinely impressive, even if it had some of the jank from that time. It's a shame so many people will never experience it.
Interesting to hear this. I've played and wrote a short article/review of Lost Odyssey[medium.com] past year, really enjoyed it and I agree it's Sakaguchi's best game to date. Curious on what the similarities are on this game (and in this case whether I'll enjoy Clair Obscur, considering it might end up feeling too similar).

They are not very similar but you will likely see the influence and inspiration there.
