Just run into the mobs to start combat, do not use the strike ability to start it, then the character with the skill equipped will always be the first in your group to play. I always have Lune go first with fire rage. Free fire aoe's every turn until she takes damage.
If you start combat with a succefull strike, it seems to nullify the skill.
In the case of first strike when your reserve party kicks in (in the event that your first party is wiped out), I think that's just random.
This is not true, either. It happens sometimes that it will be ordered that way. Other times, not. So it looks like its random.
It was like this for me, but stopped working for some reason. Maybe some events, party related, makes it stop working
It still is like this based on order of adding them to the party, BUT any story events that adds, removes, or switches control to someone messes it up until you remove and re-add in your preferred order.
and the order is going to change randomly for me, sometimes it's the order of adding them to the party, sometimes not.
the skill that said first strike gives more speed, even when I doubled checked the one who got the skill got the higher speed, still wasn't the first to hit.
That's not how that skill works, First Strike basically does the same thing as when you attack an enemy with the R1 attack to initiate the fight, if you were to put that skill on all your party members, you could just run into enemies without having to do the R1 attack and everyone will go first just like when doing the R1 attack.
It will not however affect the order in which your party goes, nor does speed, only thing affecting that is order of adding them to party, but again, if an event, cutscene or such changes anything regarding the party, it messes up the order and you have to redo it.
As an example my Lune has over 1000 speed right now, highest in the party, if I remove her and re-add her, suddenly it counts as she was added last, so in the turn order she goes 3rd instead of 1st. If I remove everyone except Lune, then add let's say character A then character B, suddenly the order becomes Lune > A > B.
Thats not true, First Strike from Lumina is not the same as manual start with advantage (the R1 attack that you mentioned tho they are similar)
Party order works for both but for R1 speed can override it based on thresholds.
Here guide with explanation how combat order works:

I stand corrected while also slightly confused as what I've said is based on my own testing which was just like I said, but granted I did minimal testing with what I had at the time.
So you're telling me that your Sciel is in the far right position when the battle starts but she still goes first?
This is completely wrong. I have Lune with first strike picto and then I'll add Sciel and then Maelle. I do first strike usually and on mobs the lineup will be this usually, but not always, and i've notice on bosses, it's always Lune, Maelle, and then Sciel. My conclusion is that it's based on your Agility attribute in which Maelle for has a much higher Agility stat than Sciel, but I don't like this cuz I dont care for agility with her build.
