What are the letter icons for when adding attributes? Is that telling me what attributes should be priortised?

Weapon scaling.

Entirely guessing here since I've yet to have to dive into them to succeed, but essentially every weapons 'boosts' a couple stats. So if you have a weapon with say B in agility, and you boost agility a ton, the boost should be even greater.

They are suppose to be weapon damage scaling. I'm guessing focusing on the stats with a letter grade instead of "Might" will make you do more damage.

I don't know the maths behind it though and could be wrong.

Just to add to that, you'll get items that will reset your stats (don't use them for every weapon you change), so don't stress too much on the perfect build early on.
Might raises your attack in general.
The Pictos skills are the game changers for your tactics and things get more interesting once you acquire more of those.

Also remember that depending on the weapon those can change, only might always improve damage. I ignore those since I change weapon so often. It's good to keep in mind if you ever want to min-max for a specific encounter.
