No you can't avoid the Bourgeons eating a party member, its a passive mechanic that those mini bosses have. They swallow them for 5 turns and spit them back out

As well as instantly spitting out if you managed to Break them out, literally.

That too
Some enemies have unblockable moves that you can do nothing about. Think of those Bourgeon fights as being on a timer, because he can even eat more than one if the fight takes too long, and that is the game telling you "level up, find more and better pictos, gather lumina points, find better weapons with better perks". So you can kill those beasties in a MUCH shorter time, it will still probably swallow one of the team then but the other two will still be powerful enough eventually to win the fight.

Do not even bother with most optional bosses until you can exceed the 9,999 damage cap the game has for Acts I and II. Eventually you can do hundreds of thousands or even millions of damage. Many bosses are designed for that really.

Wait 5 turns? That thing ate 2 of my members and never spat one out after 15 or 20 turns.

Bourgeons are doable even underleveled since they're pretty easy to dodge / parry.

They'll spit out whoever they ate on a Break / upon death so no worries there, but no it can't be parried or dodged.

I beat the first optional one I encountered. ate poor gustave twice. didn't know if it was a ruby weapon situation or he'd come back. was surprised he took no damage or status sffect and just picked up where he left off on release.
