Gradient attacks annihilate me
I have not managed to counter a single Gradient attack. I rebound my keys to one that is not notoriously unresponsive, and still - it seems I'm missing something. Enemy goes dark grey, I hammer the Gradient dodge key, get full damage and don't know what I'm doing wrong. Help, please, if anyone has a good idea...

(and no, "git gud" or "use a controller" don't count as good ideas).

All about muscle memory and focus, keep practicing. you will die until you can do it with one hand while sipping tea.

You need to time when you press the gradient dodge button with right before they attack. You can't press it right when it gets dark, you have to wait for the attack.

The timing window for gradient parries seem to be a lot bigger than regular parries so they're much easier to pull off. At least from the enemies I've seen so far.

Yeah, it's basically like a dodge. Don't counter it when they initiate the attack, but a moment before it lands.
Like with normal parrying it is as the attack hits not when the animation that shows you need to gradient counter. The animation is to just black and white animation prompt is to just show regular parry won't work.
Its harder on controller because you have to account for the triggers movement range

I found that gradients actually have way more lenient parry window, for most of them you can hit parry as soon as it gets dark, for some you need to wait a little bit, but it's still easy.

They're mainly hard because you can press regular dodge/parry instead and then you won't recover in time for gradient. But for harder fights you just learn boss patterns and know when to expect these.

For me the trick for gradients is to push W as soon as the slow down begins to speed up. But later on, this may not work for every attack...

do you have gradient parry?

Unless a world boss requires it, I don't think you even run into such attacks, and lack the parry, before ever running into the tutorial.

It's still about the attack connecting with the character, just like a regular parry but ig the slow mo makes it a bit more tricky

The gradient parry seems to share the same window as dodge.
Ignore the freeze-frame effect, its just letting you know this attack can ONLY be gradient parried. It doesn't signal anything else.
Just save at the first flag on the forgotten battlefield and battle the first group of 3 over and over and over until you get the timing right.
There is no death penalty, so just keep at it till you get it.

Haven't tested it or anything, but it definitely feels like the gradient dodge window is longer.
The pattern with all gradient attacks is like this. Screen turns grey, they start their attack animation and then it gradually slows down to a stop, then begin moving again and attack.

The parry timing is when they begin moving again.

There is really only 1 enemy I can think of that has a hard to read animation for its gradient attack.

About 25 hours in with a new gradient attack mechanic I wasn't able to counter a single attack from any boss or mob. Yet still I somehow progress in the game. Is it just a coincidence or it's part of game, but if I loose any three battles with the same pack of mobs or bosses, then on their 4th play they don't use any gradient attacks.

The only problem I have with Gradient Counters is that the first ones I encountered (not including the tutorial) had a timing that was basically "when the gradient attack warning shows, press the button" and you parry it.

I have been baited so many damn times because I see the indicator and automatically press the button, only for the attack to come out much later and hit me. They're like any other attack when it comes to defending against, you have to wait for the actual attack. It's pretty generous though.
