From what I can tell, input from the left stick will interrupt the sprint, where as movement from the right stick does not. So I can start a sprint in any direction, but then can only change directions by moving the camera.
By only holding forward on the left stick and then using the camera to control the direction I can sprint without interruption. Which is serviceable, but it's very much not ideal to be unable to change directions relative to the camera while sprinting.
EDIT: Upon some further testing, in my case, it seems the interruptions are linked to specific angles/directions relative to the camera's facing. My character will never sprint forward-right (~45° on the left thumbstick) or back-right (~135° on the thumbstick). This happens regardless of sprint being set to hold or toggle.
Went ahead and submitted a bug report through their form. Hopefully it'll be an easy fix.
if I move the left stick left or upper left it cancels the sprint, making the character stutter and stumble.
it's really annoying and I thought my controller was going bad
This partually worked (put on both joysticks? still stutters, but less) -
