Reason for the countdown to begin with?

I've finished the game and the only thing I'm still confused about is what the purpose of the gommage countdown was to begin with?
In the letter from Alicia to Verso she states that the Paintress is painting a warning on her monolith of the few she can save as her power wanes.
Who is she saving and how is erasing everyone beyond a certain age "a warning"?

But for my understand is everything just paint,not real. Only Alicia family alone is real thing in the whole world.

it was to force the painting to shut down, everyone would be dead after the countdown, she would then have to leave the painting, that was the real renoirs plan but then maelle wanted to save it, thats why the end fight happened
