If you're new to this genre entirely - I'd suggest maybe trying this game first, as it's simpler in terms of character progression and combat (less stats and different mechanical interactions to worry about), gear, potions, et cetera. Do keep in mind that this game DEMANDS action inputs during combat, meaning you are required to carefully look at attack animations in order to dodge and parry or else your entire party gets wiped during bossfights fairly quickly. In BG3 characters hitting someone or dodging an attack are all based on math and dice rolls. You are not required to make any action inputs during attacks, but you need to consider your party positioning in battle, their stats, synergies between their abilities, enemy composition and their skillsets, among other things. That is not to say you don't have to do these things in this game also, but it's less of a factor. Positioning, for example, isn't a factor at all in this game.

In terms of role-playing I'd say that BG3 has far more options and opportunities for playing a certain character if you care about that. There are a LOT of dialog options, some are dependent on your character's stats (such as charisma or intellect for example). You can be the regular good guy, a psychotic villain, a cynical ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, or a bit of everything. Oh, and characters remember what you said and did. Your actions will have consequences, some are immediately obvious, while others will manifest way later. In E33 you can sometimes pick a dialog option while conversing with characters, but I've yet to see any consequences. This game seems to follow the standard JRPG(ish) model, in that characters mostly stick to their script. So far (8 hours in) I've only seen a few instances where I could attack a neutral character or not, but I would imagine that it won't affect the overall plot either way.

So, I'd say maybe google a bit, watch a review of both games to make an informed decision. Both games are great, both are worthy of a purchase at some point, but since you say you're new - maybe start with this one.

Those two games are from completely different genres. Expedition 33 is a "westernized" JRPG (like Final Fantasy or Persona) and Baldurs Gate 3 is a classic CRPG (Baldurs Gate, Pathfinder, Divinity). Both games are great but you can not put them into the same genre.

You should watch tests of both games because it is not unlikely that you love one and hate the other.

2 different games, i'd suggest to watch a bit of gameplay on youtube about both, you can even buy the games on steam, play less than 2 hours and refund if you are not satisfied. But Exepedition 33 is about 30hours long if you don't go for the 100%. Baldur's gate is super good and also quite long, you have a lot to do and the game is known for being incredible, you just need to like the gameplay i guess
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Different games. Recommendation: Play both.
The combat system in Baldur's Gate is heaps more accessible than E33, but doesn't meant it is superior, but very different. So it's a matter of taste and preferences.

If you like combat that rewards quick reflexes and great timing than E33 may appeal to you. This is why E33 will have a smaller audience for those who don't want to be stuck with the easy mode which is more QTE.
Different genre believe it or not, this is a JRPG with heavy and I mean heavy focus on combat and performing well in its battle system in order to be good at it and progress through the game well.

BG3 is a more free form game with a focus on movement, NPC conversations, and a lot more strategic fights where you'll often be outnumbered and be required to rely on more creativity and guile to come out on top. While they're both turn based JRPGs tend to be more rigid in how you're meant to approach them and CRPGs often allow you to get through situations through violence, peace, betrayal, and abusing inventory systems.

Two VERY different types of games. Impossible to say one or the other as it entirely depends on what type of game you prefer. Both being turn based is not really enough to say they're similar. Especially since they approach the turn-based system very differently. And everything else about the games is different too. Just watch gameplay videos and see which one looks most appealing. Both are great games.
Tough question.
Why not both.

Both are turn-based. But as with all genres, there can be huge variety in its approach. Like Doom and Portal are both FPS games, but they are EXTREMELY different types of games despite that.
Both, you likely won't regret it.

If you really have to pick for now. Baldur gate 3 hands down it's not even a competitiion.
Consider getting this game in the future though.

There's no timer of any sort. But since there is an action component, when it's the opponents turn you have to be ready to react for its attack.
