Can you have more than 3 in your active party?
Or is 3 the maximum?

3 is the limit, but people on the bench still get EXP so don't worry about it too much.

you can have 3 max in your party, but if your main party dies, you can continue playing with the other characters that aren't in the party during a fight.

Because you accidentally pressed "remove from the party" in the party menu. You can check if the member has the yellow flag near his level.
