It's worse than you realize: the first expedition was Expedition 0 (100), the following year was Expedition 99; to understand the lore you'd need to play the previous 67 expeditions.

Or, and hear me out, you could get the cliffnotes version from some helpful people that already did the homework for you and definitely nothing happened to them.
