Combat familiarity
This game definitely looks interesting, but I do have some questions before I buy.

1. Am I wrong in thinking combat is similar to FFX but with flashy FX like a newer Dark Souls kind of game? Almost like a turn based DS?

2. Is the story as engaging as any traditional RPG from the past 30 years that'll pull me in from the start up to a few hours in?

3. From a perspective of someone who has played RPGs since at LEAST games from the early 2000's, what's your honest take on it so far without revealing spoilers as much as possible?

I just replayed FF10 a few months back, and this game feels a lot like FF10. The exploration on the local maps feels like FF10's main corridor with side branches, with one main path but many side paths for collectibles/extra rewards/optional bosses. Also it has an actual overworld map, which is a step up from FF10's travel menu. Combat is closer to modern JRPGs like persona (a lot of interacting abilities between characters, not just purely numbers). Also the parry/dodge system is a big deal. You will die even to "trash" mobs if you get hit too many times.

I've only finished Act 1 so far but story-wise I think this might be right there with the best of them. It is very French though, even down to having black and white scenes where characters stare emotionally into the distance.

1) Never played FFX. Of the classics, it's closest to the Mario & Luigi RPG games where it's a normal JRPG turn based combat but you have to hit action buttons in time to make your attacks stronger and defend from enemy attacks.

2) Yes. I (and several of my friends also admitted the same) cried in the prologue. THE PROLOGUE. Imagine what the full game is gonna do.

3) It's what you thought JRPGs of the future would look like when you played Final Fantasy 6 instead of what Final Fantasy 7 turned out to be. I'm also getting crazy Terranigma vibes from the exploration areas.

1) Turn-based DS is a great way to describe the game. If you don't learn to successfully use the dodge and parry then you're going to have a hard time in the game.

2) The story so far is very engaging, and yes, you are going to get pulled in from the start.

3) My take is that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a successful fusion of the sense of awe, wonder, joy of exploration, and engaging combat typically had from DS-type games with the story-telling, character development, and combat systems (including turn-based mechanics that give you a moment to think and plan during a battle) from traditional RPGs.

I'd heartily recommend this title to anyone sitting on the fence.
