Why are there so many people...
Asking if they can play the game without the quick time/dodge mechanics? It's been showcased as one of the MAIN points of the game. I guarantee most people throw it on expert, just to find out it's exactly what it says, HARD and get frustrated. These are the same people who will defend terrible combat systems like in FF7 remake and FF 16. Blows my mind.

Because we want a turn based RPG, not a souls reaction based perfection timing game. These genres do not go together. I refunded it over the issue. I'll just watch it on yt as the story seemed cool.

One of my favorite old turn based games waaaaay back were the Mario and Luigi rpg games on Nintendo handhelds. I thought button timing imputs mixed with turn based combat in those games worked great.

I don't really understand why people have an issue with those sorts of games existing.

It is a turn based RPG, it has nothing to do with dark souls lol. Legend of Dragoon, Shadow Hearts, Mario RPG, there are plenty of them out there. This one just makes you have to dodge as well. I get it's not for some people, but man the more I look into it, people just seem like they can't do it and blame the game instead of not wanting to put in the effort. It's a cakewalk on easy and a nightmare on expert.

I know plenty of people who disliked both legend of dragoon and shadow hearts for their combat. So stuff like this was always a controversial choice.

I am eating so good in these threads. Monumental skill issue on an earth-shaking scale.

I mean if you think pressing a button at an exactly correct time makes you a better human in your day to day life, more power to you lol

I'd rather spend that time learning something useful.

Maybe I'm too old and slow at 44 (though I parried pretty well in Elden Ring), but I even turned on infinite HP in the cheat engine and spent about 30 minutes trying to learn how to parry Maelle. No luck.

I think this is part of it, I'm 38 and eventually you just start to ask yourself what the hell you're even doing.
Worse than that are the people giving it negative reviews bc it has dodge/parry...
like... it's exactly as advertised. and now you're giving it negative reviews bc it's not what you want it to be?

That's not how games should be reviewed lmao

just missing some indicators for perfect dodge/parry like a short flash or something which can be removed at harder difficulties after learning the basics. just learning the correct timing by just watching the animations is a bit rough and the window for perfect dodge/parry is very small.

anyways, it is how it is I guess and I'm not a fan really. Atlus are still the King for this combat style.

Obviously they do go together, I'm having a blast. It's literally what makes the combat stand out.
Modern gamers want to have their hand held. Anything that remotely requires critical thinking and they complain

Well I'm 37 and It's not that hard on Normal difficulty. The timing isnt that bad just have to press the button a little earlier. Just have to practice and it also helped that I played Elden Ring.

If you're having such a huge issue, then why are you trying to parry instead of dodging? The game quite literally tells you that parry/perfect dodge have a much shorter window. So why would you even attempt that if you can't dodge normally? Not to mention that you don't really need to be fast or have good reactions. The enemy always telegraph the exact move they're going to make. So you know well in advance what will happen and when you should dodge/parry. Meaning you just need to time it well. Obviously it's easier said than done. But it shouldn't be a problem despite being "old and slow". Unless you're actually talking senile old. But considering you said you parried in ER, it really shouldn't be a problem.

Its something you'll get used to within gaming on the internet. It's always "lower the game to my level" never "rise to the game's challenge".
That's not always possible. I started gaming with Atari; I'm old and slow now. My hand eye coordination, reflexes, and map awareness are way down to the point I just can't keep up with action based games. For reference, I still struggled a bit finishing FF7 Rebirth on easy.

I'm not demanding ever game cater to the aging veterans, but when we see a fun looking game that claims to be turn based it gets our hopes up that we may have found something to match the speed of our creaking bones. It's especially disheartening if you're a lifelong game such as myself, realizing that a good majority of games that used to bring us so much entertainment are no longer accessible.

Objectively wrong. The game has always marketed itself as having real-time mechanics. They quite literally sell the game as such. "turn-based RPG with real-time mechanics", it flat out says so on the Steam store page. They even have an entire section when you read about the game that goes over the "Reactive turn-based combat: Open an active dimension in combat - dodge, parry, and counter in real time".

This is 100% on you for not reading.
