not a trol post, genuine question! if it is a game for me!
So, i am heavily debating on getting this game now or maybe later, i hear great things about its world and its story which sound good to me. BUT

one thing really puts me off, and that is the turn based combat.
I hate yes, hate turn based combat. i think it removes a lot of the excitement out of a battle, and that is just something i dont vibe with.

I tried such games out many times like civ games but i just cant get into it. if you look on my profile you will see that i am however a big fan of real time strategy games, as for me, any combat is better when it is in real time, when the enemy can hit me just like i hit them. where you have to think more directly about your actions.

And so, this is why i came to ask is this game for me. because in an rpg sense i can kinda look past it. like with the baldurs gate games. i still hated it (turn based combat) with a passion. but it was tolerable due to how the story went. and while i hate turn based in games i dont mind it outside of gaming, so dnd or board games for example.

so i wonder if the same will be the case for me in this game even if it isnt a true "rpg" in a sense, i still am curious about the story, but the thought of turn based combat is really swaying my decision to purchase it.

is there anyone who feels kinda like i do that did buy it, or has some advice for me?

I don’t typically like turn based combat, but occasionally I dig it, depending on how engaging the story and other gameplay elements are.

It's turn based with an important emphasis on real time combat through rolls and parrys. Watch some gameplay videos to make up your mind. If you like narration, lore and art design you wont be disappointed though.

Like Saaguen wrote, I'd watch some gameplay videos to see if the combat looks appealing to you. It is primarily turn-based, with QTE prompts for attacks and visual/audio cues for dodging and parrying. It may or may not be for you.
It's not for you. Just don't. No game is for everyone, it's not made for you.
Also what is "not a true rpg" supposed to mean? It's only a true rpg if it appeals to the zoomer brain that requires a dopamine hit every nanosecond to function? We've already lost the final fantasy series to this, don't take these scraps from us too..

So here's how combat works: your party and enemies attack in turns, you can take as much as you like to select your actions. After your attack is initiated, for most actions you will have to complete a series of quick-time events to fully charge it up. when and enemy attacks you, there's an option to evade or parry, which is done in real time, also as a quicktime event; some enemies attack in combos, each of it's individual attacks have to be evaded or parries separately. Window for evasion is rather tight, parry even more so.

Neither is mechanically mandatory but, even on normal, it's highly desired to do both successfully. Your attack can do much more damage if fully charged and attacks even from basic enemies on normal hit like a truck and healing is rather limited. Plus, perfectly parrying all enemy attaxks in a combo gives you a strong counter, also reinforcing its usefulness.

Now, make of it what you will, I can't say if this is something you'll like and it's not even active time battle system, but it's far from being static menu grinding either. Dodge/parry is hard even on normal, take this from a souls games veteran.

As for plot, it's intriguing and seems to be tailored for a more mature audience, but it's certainly not Disco Elysium, if you know what I mean.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

If we didn't have FF15 and 13 I'd have said 16 has the worst combat of all FF's I've ever played lol (and yes I'm also old). I'm not saying they're not good games, they're fine for what they are. But what I mean by we "lost" final fantasy is we lost the series to the mentality that turnbased combat is "outdated" and "worse than action combat", and that final fantasy needed to "evolve with the times" for a "modern audience". I'm sick of hearing that ♥♥♥♥ over and over again, with every game slowly turning into the same generic souls/DMC slop clone, when games like Baldurs Gate 3/Dragon Quest 11/Persona/Metaphor prove that turn-based is not a worse type of gameplay, it's just a different genre. Hack and slash combat fans have *plenty* to choose from (while talking mad ♥♥♥♥ about anything turn-based and demanding that these games change to suit them), us turn-based fans have had slim pickings for decades now.
thanks for the replies, i opted not to buy it as many say i shouldnt if i hate turn based. thanks :)

true rpgs are games that let you make your own character and let you do your own thing, i see this game is more of a story game solely focused on that and exploring the map. but this is my opinion.

you can also just get a month sub for xbox game pass, then play the game, that's like $12 or something, or if you never done it it might be $1 for 2 weeks,
I think even ppl that normally do not like turn based games could like this because of the active system like parry/dodge/jump and qte's for attacks, or it could make you hate the game even more if you don't like that,
I think the game is amazing and would recommend ppl to at least try it, can also just buy it on steam, play for less then 2 hours and if you don't like it then refund it.
