So confused?
Why in the prologue beginning everyone turns to petals when giant changed numbers to 33? And whats with the giant and Expedition its self whats the meaning of it all?

Think of it as an alternate reality earth set around the 1800's where a being called the Paintress destroys the world. Every Year she paints a number on her monolith. It started with 100 and counts down every year. Every time the number goes down everyone everywhere of that age gets Thanos Dusted. It has now gone all the way down to 33 so the world population is dwindling rapidly. No old people are left and future generations are basically doomed. IT was all explained in the prologue if you took the time to talk to people and get the back story and pay attention to the dialogue/cutscenes.

The game teaches you this as you go, I don't think you are supposed to understand right away - that's part of the mystery. But yeah I was lost too.

Wait what? Let's say the day for Exped 33 hits, all the people aged 33 vanish, and the day after a 32 year old has his birthday. Does he also vanish despite being a day late? Or are they just.. successfully dodging the vanishing?

They vanish next year.

If it happens once per year, wouldn't the paintress inscribe the same number each year, since everyone who wasn't taken one year would be one year older the next time she came around? If it started at 100, and all 100-year-olds were taken, then the next year, the magic number was 99, then folks who turned 100 during the intervening year would escape?

No it takes everyone the painted number or older. Like it is 33 now when it goes to 32 everyone 32 and older will disapear. There is no dodging it.

That's why Expedition 33 is so desperate to succeed. They know that there won't be many more people capable of sending an expedition soon.

And honestly, once it gets to about 20, everybody's going to have trouble just holding society together and not dying from a lack of able bodies and the needed skills being lost to The Paintress.
